The Coalition for Space Exploration recently called attention to an observation by Dr. Jim Rice, a Mars scientist at Arizona State University, that Buzz Aldrin's face could be seen behind his gold visor, looking at the camera instead of the U.S. flag he was facing.

Given the recent similar observation by Andy Chaikin about the visibility of Neil Armstrong's face in a 16mm still, I began to wonder...

Is it possible to see the face of each of the 12 moonwalkers in photos or film stills while they were standing on the surface of the Moon?

Just to get the famous one out of the way - Jack Schmitt working at the rover with his visor up.

This is hardly news. I spotted Aldrin's face looking at the camera when I saw the EVA photographs published in various magazines in 1969. I can remember distinguishing the two similar "saluting the flag" pictures by thinking of them as "the one with the fingers" and "the one with the face."

I remember noticing that also — years ago. I figured it was not a secret, or an issue. He was probably just looking to make sure Neil got the shot.

In the photo of Gene Cernan holding the end of the flag with the Earth in the lunar sky above him you can see his face looking at the camera through the gold visor. It's not easy to see but it's definitely visible.
