Cosmonauts Maxim Surayev and Yelena Serova have left the active cosmonaut team to accept their new office as members of the Russian State Duma after the recent elections, German space journalist Gerhard Kowalski reports.

According to Kowalski, the Russian cosmonaut team is now down to 31 members, with just one woman member. Alexander Kaleri and Pavel Vinogradov, management astronauts with RKK Enerigya, can still be counted into the group of active cosmonauts.

With Russians going to only two spots on the ISS the chance of flying again went down even more.

According to Sergei Shamsutdinov on the Novosti Kosmonavtiki forum (via Bart Hendrickx), cosmonaut Sergei Volkov (Soyuz TMA-12, ISS 17, Soyuz TMA-02M, ISS-28/29, Soyuz TMA-18M, ISS 45/46) retired from the cosmonaut corps on Feb. 28.

Volkov is now the "leading specialist of the Star City cosmonaut team."

Sergei Volkov (as noted above), Alexander Samokutyayev (Soyuz TMA-21, ISS 27/28, Soyuz TMA-14M, ISS 41/42) and Sergei Revin (Soyuz TMA-04M, ISS 31/32) have left the cosmonaut corps, reports TASS.
Earlier, a TASS source in the aerospace sector said Volkov had submitted his resignation, while two other cosmonauts were removed from flights for medical reasons.

"The inter-departmental commission for the selection of cosmonauts and their assignment to the crews of manned spacecraft and stations made a decision at its April 21 session to recommend the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center to relieve Sergei Volkov of the duties of a 1st class test-cosmonaut and cosmonaut-instructor of the cosmonaut team, Alexander Samokutyayev of the duties of a test-cosmonaut and cosmonaut-instructor and deputy commander of the cosmonaut team and Sergei Revin of the duties of a 3rd class test-cosmonaut of the cosmonaut group," the press office said in a statement obtained by TASS.
