Associated Press (January 8, 2010):
Retired astronaut and NASA test pilot C. Gordon Fullerton is being treated in a Southern California hospital after suffering a massive stroke.

His wife, Marie, said in a statement Friday that the 73-year-old Fullerton suffered the stroke during an outpatient procedure on Dec. 31 and is improving at a facility specializing in stroke treatment.

...Fullerton's family asked for privacy.

I will pray for a full recovery. He is really a test pilot legend. With more than 16,000 hours of flying time, Fullerton piloted 135 different types of aircraft. His Space Shuttle related missions: ALT, STS-3, STS-51-F

Isn't that always the way. The man just retires and this happens. Such sad news indeed. I pray he recovers quickly and fully very soon.

Colonel Fullerton is in my family's prayers for a speedy and full recovery.

My father in law and I just bumped into him at the Edwards AFB Air Show back in October. He was his typical friendly, polite and unassuming self.

Really sad to learn this news about Gordon Fullerton. I hope and pray he makes a full and swift recovery.

I saw Gordon Fullerton at the GOE and so wish I had gone over to shake his hand and thank him for his contributions to aerospace.

I'm very sorry to learn of Gordon Fullerton's health problems.

My wife and I were at KSC for his launch on STS-3 in the spring of 1982. Later that summer we took a camping trip to Mammouth Cave National Park in Kentucky and I saw him at the Visitor's Center.

I wasn't quite sure it really was an astronaut visiting Mammouth Cave, so somewhat like a stalker I followed him in the parking lot. When I saw the Texas plates on his VW Bus, I screwed up my courage and asked if he was Gordon Fullerton. He seemed surprised, but pleased at the same time to be recognized. He introduced me to his wife and kids and I called my wife and son over to meet him.

He was very gracious, posing for a photo and he gave my son his autograph and an STS-3 mission patch which we still have.

A gentleman and a classy guy. I wish him a speedy, fully recovery.

I am sorry to learn that Gordon Fullerton is seriously ill.

I first met Col.Fullerton at the 1996 ASE Planetary Congress in Ottawa, Ontario. During one of the events that took place, Col. Fullerton gladly poised for a picture with me with the Parlament Buildings in the background just accros the river.

I have met Col. Fullerton several more times in the years since and he has always been very pleasent to chat with. I wish Col. Fullerton a speedy recovery.

I also am sad to hear of Gordon Fullerton's health problems.

"tfrielan" you tell a great story of a chance incounter. But I have come to the conclusion there are no chance incounters in life. You were destined to meet him, and he you.

I am saddened to hear of Col. Fullerton's illness, and too wish him a speedy recovery.

I first met Gordon Fullerton at the Rockwell employee's rollout ceremony of 'Enterprise' the day after the official rollout. He was in his Blue flightsuit, and I had on two buttons- one for the shuttle, and the second a tenth year anniversary of "Star Trek" button- (I figured it was okay to wear that), He saw that button, and said, "oh, you are one of those", what - was I wearing spock ears or something? I replied that it had made it's mark with the name on the orbiter, and let it go!

Since then, he and I had run into one another at Edwards, and a couple years ago he and I were on a panel in San Diego discussing the "Columbia" accident.
I pray that he makes a full recovery!

At this point, the family has requested privacy... so we're unlikely to hear any updates for a while. In fact, no news is probably the best news right now. Stroke recovery is often a very long process... especially if the stroke was severe.

Here's hoping that Fullerton can recover sufficiently in order have good quality of life.

It breaks my heart to see Gordon Fullerton so severely impacted by a stroke.

I had the chance to meet him at the Test Pilot's Hall Of Fame event in Lancaster and when he gave a speech to a group of educators and teachers at Dryden.

Gordon was always so unassuming and humble, he was surprised when someone wanted to talk or take a photo with him. An amazing man.

I had been wondering about Col. Fullerton's condition. He is one of the few astronauts I have met personally, and, as stated above, seemed surprised that I recognized him.

I sincerely hope he continues to improve and wish him the best.

I heard from one of the astronauts at the Astronaut Autograph and Memorabilia Show that he is recovering, his spirits are good, and he is working hard in therapy, but he is still very badly affected on the side that was initially paralyzed in the stroke. Apparently when he first started showing stroke symptoms, it took nearly 1-1/2 hours to evacuate him to a hospital in L.A. where they could treat him properly. In stroke situations, every minute counts. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.
