Happy Birthday, Sir!!! May you have many more. I'll always treasure the talk you and I had about our apprenticeships.

(I've pitched it before, but here it is again--if you haven't read Guenter's--and Russ Still's--book, "The Unbroken Chain", you're missing one of the best.)

LOL- I'll bet Guenter wouldn't remember a young long-haired kid showing up on his pad 38 years ago to collect a box of relays for my boss at RCA (Und vat iss yoor bisness heer, young man?) but the next time I saw him face to face was to have him sign a copy of his book and we were both sporting gray hair by then.

Guenter wouldn't say it of himself- but 'in my book,' he is a Legend! Happy Birthday!

Happy birthday Ole friend!

Ze man is fondly remembered by the "bald eagles" here in NAR country in Downey!

We all hope he will make it back here to Downey some day soon. But make sure that the blue flight suit fits, and says Rockwell Int.

In case you are wondering where "Guenther Went", I met Guenther in person in April 2004 when I went to Titusville to attend a model show at the Elks lodge there. He was there chatting with one of the vendors, an aviation artist, and was not a formal guest of the show. I think he is an Elk and he keeps a boat there in the area. During shuttle launches, he powers out to an area in the river, watches, then heads back home. Great way to beat the traffic out of KSC I must say and quite a view at the same time.

Well, a couple days prior, I packed my already signed copy of "The Unbroken Chain" in my luggage (I live in Omaha, so I had to fly down) and I didn't quite know why at the time since I had already read the book. But when I saw Guenther there, I immediately drove to the hotel, got the book and came back.

A friend of mine and I chatted with Guenther for a few minutes after I got back and we showed him our built models on the table (I had a 1/144 space shuttle Columbia stack, my buddy had a 1/144 Saturn V). My friend got the base of his Saturn V autographed by Guenther and I had Guenther personalize my book since it was already signed. He wrote "Always obey the pad leader!"

Guenther is quite a fun guy to talk to as well. Most of the stuff concerning Mercury through Apollo were the same topics covered in the book, but he did provide some interesting insights into John Young and his blunt nature as this was a little over a year after Columbia burned up. He also chuckled when I asked if I should address him as "Private Fifth Class".

Happy birthday Guenther!
