News reports this morning, a small plane missing in North Georgia, said to be carrying pilot Scott Crossfield. Disappeared from radar yesterday during stormy weather. More as it's reported.

A moment of silence is signified by an entry with no words and only a period.

Search for Missing Plane
quote:
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) The Civil Air Patrol's Georgia Wing said Wednesay night that it is aiding in the search for a single-engine plane that vanished on a flight from Alabama to Virginia.

The last radar contact with the aircraft was in the north Georgia area, and the CAP was working with the local Emergency Management Agency officials in conducting air and ground searches along the flight path, CAP Capt. Paige Joyner said.

Joyner said the plane left Prattville, Ala., about 9 a.m. Tuesday en route to Manassas, Va.

The identity of the pilot was not released, but Joyner said the family reported no contact.

Controllers Lose Contact With Cessna Owned By Crossfield
Aviation Daily 04/20/2006, page 05
Adrian Schofield
quote:
Famed test pilot Scott Crossfield's Cessna 210 aircraft disappeared off radar late yesterday in Georgia, and as The DAILY went to press, National Transportation Safety Board officials were trying to determine the fate of the plane and its passengers.

NTSB officials said they believed Crossfield, 84, was on board the aircraft, which FAA officials said went out of radar and radio contact about 60 miles northwest of Atlanta. The Atlanta air traffic control center was reporting thunderstorms in the area at that time. At press-time, board officials were trying to determine the aircraft's precise location, the number of people onboard and their condition. The NTSB stands ready to launch an investigation, officials said.

Crossfield in 1953 became the first man to fly at twice the speed of sound in a Douglas D-558-II Skyrocket; he also was in the cockpit for the first flights of the X-15 near-space research aircraft.

Among his honors are the Lawrence Sperry Award, Octave Chanute Award, Iven C. Kincheloe Award, Harmon International Trophy, an Aviation Week Laureate award and the Collier Trophy. He has been inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame (1983), the International Space Hall of Fame (1988), and the Aerospace Walk of Honor (1990). -AS

This story does not contain any information about finding any airplane wreckage. But I thought I would post the link anyway.

Very sad news indeed. Let's spare a thought and a prayer (if you're so inclined..) for his family and friends tonight.

It's of little consolation, I know, but he died doing what he loved to do: flying.

He is currently on a flight taking him to a new altitude...one that even the X-15 couldn't reach.

Just an FYI.. as I sit here in total shock and a bit of disbelief.. I recall my last question I asked him before leaving his house last month.. I asked him what one thing he was most proud of (and believe me he has accomplishments galore!). His answer was soft spoken and I can still visualize him saying it today... "its the Fairfax Co. public school across the street" which proudly bears his name A. Scott Crossfield Elementary! He was most proud of that above all else at least thats what he told me! He always talked about the future and always said its todays kids that will pave that way! Just thought I would share this private conversation w/ all as it speaks so much of this great man!

I wish I were more poetic, because it is difficult to express how it hurts me inside to learn of this tragic news. Scott always imparted a little bit of himself in each of the little notes he wrote us, emails he sent us, or handshakes and smiles he shared with us.

Now all of those little bits and pieces are hurt, sad and lonely.

Kind Regards

R.I.P Scott Crossfield

HIGH FLIGHT
Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds-and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence.
Hovering there I've chased the shouting wind along,
and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew.
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Here's an idea for those of us that were lucky enough to get a photo signed by Crossfield. Buy a frame for your office desktop (assuming you work in an office) and display a photo of Scott for next few weeks.

Whenever someone asks who's in the photo, take the time to explain just who Scott Crossfield was and what his accomplishments were. Explain that our country lost a true aviation hero today. The best tribute we can give to the man is to keep his memory alive.

This reminds me of a little-known quote by Charles Lindbergh. All though the circumstances aren't the same, the spirit and attitude still is. Scott died doing what he loved most - flying.

"A man can criticize a pilot for flying into a mountainside in fog, but I would rather by far die on a mountainside than in bed. What sort of man would live where there is no daring? Is life itself so dear that we should blame one for dying in adventure? Is there a better way to die?"
— Charles A. Lindbergh

It came to me the other night, that a "star" for the moment of silence was more approppriate than a period.....it is not an end, here, but a new star in the Heavens, for Scott Crossfield.

I think it would be neat if everybody that knew Scoty or at least met him would share their memories in this thread. It would prove to be interesting reading and a tribute to a great man that gave so much of himself and his time to lend wings to our dreams. I will start out. I'll never forget how proud he was when I told him that I named my eldest son after him. When he met my son and his namesake years later his face glowed! I also remember how happy he was when I hooked him up with his "special hero" Indy race driver Johnny Rutherford. Funny thing is that both of them considerd the other as their hero, but never met.

It is with a heavy heart that I write this. I am lost for words. It seems that all the hopes and prayers have gone unanswered and the world is a much poorer place with Scott Crossfields passing.

R.I.P. Scotty.... I will always treasure our exchanges.

Respectfully, Derek

I knew Scott Crossfield by way of interviews on TV and tape - that is to say not at all. I respected the man immensely. Our country, our collective hobby has lost a great hero. He will be missed by many.

My prayers go to his family and to those of you in our cS family who knew him and met him.

Godspeed Mr. Crossfield.
