Do NASA Astronauts who are assigned to Star City, either as ISS Expedition trainees, or in management/support roles (such as Director Of Operations) have the option of bringing their families with them? If so, is that typically the case, or do most leave them in the U.S. for the year or so they're typically based there? On the one hand, uprooting your family for a year or two can be disruptive, and I presume the quality of education would be a factor. On the other hand, it would offer a unique experience to live in another country for a period of time. Just curious. |

As I recall, some do take their wives with them, but the wives typically also work in the space program in some capacity (medical or mission support) and are able to go over as part of their job. Plus, typically they don't have any kids yet either.I've yet to hear of an astronaut living in Russia who has brought their wife and kids over with them and I tend to think that most don't simply because it is such a stressful situation to do that. I believe it may have been done with a couple families who had infants or young children who aren't at school age yet. But nothing firm comes to mind. |

I'm not sure my wife would be happy to hear, "hey honey, I'm going to live in Russia for a year, and then spend 6 months in space. See you in a year-and-a-half!" Or course, maybe that's nothing new for military wives.Cheers, Kevin | |
