I'm currently adding captions to photographs for books on the first cosmonaut team that Rex Hall and I have written, and I'm perplexed about the identity of the person seated beside Pavel Popovich in these two shots. I am almost certain he is a well-known film star (European?) but I simply cannot put a name to the face. Does anyone know for sure who he is? Any help much appreciated.

Please let me know if you have any idea as to this fellow's identity. There's an unflown Group 1 cosmonaut also in this (cropped) photo and I really want to use it in the book, but hate having to write "unknown person" only to have a dozen reviewers asking why I hadn't identitifed ...... as the mystery man.

Any help appreciated.

Colin

Back in the 1970's I was quite a movie fan and was quite knowleagable on movies of the 1960's but I do not immediately recognise this person.

I will have a good think over the next few days and see if I can come up with anything.

Was this photo taken in Star City because if so I doubt he is a Western movie star.

Best wishes
Rob

Many thanks, Rob. I'd say the photographs were almost certainly taken in the cosmonaut training centre. Because the later-dismissed Mars Rafikov also appears in the uncropped version of these photos, it was taken somewhere between 1960 and 1962.

This is very tentative but following a google search on Russian movie stars I think
Alexei Batalov (born 1928) looks like the guy in your photo.

The google search produced a number of photographs but there is a good one in a set currently on eBay that came up as the first item on the search.

eBay item number 140243862433
See the 26th photo (black & white with an actress).

Batalov fits the sort of profile that would allow him to mix with the early cosmonauts. See his Wikipedia biography.

This message comes with a big health warning. I am far from certain.

Jill thinks the eBay photo may have been reversed?

Best wishes

Rob: There's a definite resemblance, but a couple of things prelude it being Batalov. I have looked at a profile photo of Batalov and the nose does not match that on the guy in the photo. Also, as this photo was taken in 1960-62, Batalov would have been in his early 30s at the time, whereas this fellow looks to be in his sixties. Danged if I know where I've seen him before!

But many thanks for helping, old mate.

Colin
