Does anyone know of a photo with all seven Mercury astronauts and President John Kennedy standing together? I would think there MUST be such a photo somewhere but I don't recall seeing it. |

In the second row, the Mercury astronauts are, from l to r, Wally Schirra (second from the far left), Alan Shepard, Gordo Cooper, Deke Slayton, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, and Scott Carpenter. The wives of the Mercury astronauts are standing in the third row. They are, from l to r, Jo Schirra, Marje Slayton, Annie Glenn, Louise Shepard, Betty Grissom, Rene Carpenter, and Trudy Cooper. In the front row, l to r, I recognize NASA Administrator Jim Webb, [don't know, darn] JFK, and LBJ. |

Thanks for the photo and IDs. I did some research and found that this was a ceremony honoring James Webb. The photo was taken October 10, 1963. Five weeks before the assassination. |

That's Air Force legend General Curtis Lemay in the dark wheel hat to the left of each picture. He was Air Force Chief of Staff at the time after commanding Strategic Air Command for 10 years. |

These are wonderful photos of the Collier's Trophy presentation.I'm pretty sure there were other group photos, though, of the seven Project Mercury astronauts standing with JFK. Surely for the postflight WH visit that honored Alan Shepard. And didn't they all convene once again following John Glenn's flight? Even Joe Kennedy was there, in a wheelchair. |

I thought so too Kris. But J. L. Pickering told me no. As far as the ceremony on May 8th 1961 for Shepard, nobody thought of it. As to the Glenn ceremony, Cooper was still in Australia. There is a photo with the 7 and Richard Nixion in front of the Capitol.

Steve at Farthest Reaches has a couple of signed photos with six of the seven and their wives at the White House with the Kennedys - the Glenns were absent. |

I'm going to add to this topic by asking, is there a photo of JFK and Neil Armstrong together? |

Armstrong and Kennedy? Unlikely, as Armstrong and his NASA Group 2 compatriots were selected in September 1962 and Kennedy was killed in November 1963. As Amstrong's first flight on Gemini 8 was in March 1966 I doubt there was much to justify a photo call with the President? (IMHO) |

According to First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong (p. 223), Kennedy and Armstrong never met one another. |

If not Armstrong, did JFK ever meet any of the other group 2, 3, 4... astronauts face to face? Obviously the later group member meetings would have to be before being selected. |

As far as I know Alan Shepard was the only man John Kennedy ever met who walked on the moon.I remember asking Shepard about this at the Gemini Celebration Dinner in March 1993. It was one of the personal quests he had (I'm sure there were many). |

Carrying that thought further, interesting to think that JFK met astronauts who (later) flew in the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and Space Shuttle programs. Probably every program to date other than Skylab. |

A new book called Portrait of Camelot just published and out in bookstores has photos previously seen and many photos never before seen of JFK. On page 284 is a color photo of JFK on the South Lawn presenting a Collier trophy and all 7 astronauts are behind him. NOTE: In the format shown it is a wide angle distant photo - but you can make them out with the exception of Gus Grissom half hidden by LBJ who stands before him. The photo is by Cecil Stoughton as are ALL the photos in the book. If this photo exists (and I never have seen it before) the JFK library might have a couple of others from that sequence. Editor's note: Threads merged. |

According to the Boston Globe's Big Picture, a four-year, $10 million effort to digitize the JFK Library and Museum's archives is nearing completion, and LIFE Magazine has just released a series unpublished photos of the president.(The two space-related shots at the above link are not among the "unpublished" but maybe more shots of the President interacting with NASA are set to emerge...) |
