Chris Faranetta, Vice President of Orbital Spaceflight for Space Adventures, Ltd., passes along the news that Vladimir S. Syromiatnikov has died. From NASA's History Office: quote: Vladimir S. Syromiatnikov was educated at Bauman Technical University in Moscow and went to work With RKK Energia of Kaliningrad upon graduation in 1956. He was the designer of one of the most successful pieces of space hardware used by the Soviet Union, the docking collar used to link two spacecraft together. It was adapted for use in the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project in 1975, successful in more than 200 dockings of Soviet/Russian missions, and [was] used aboard the International Space Station [currently] being constructed...
He was 72. Services will be held at RSC Energia in Russia this Friday. |

From The Washington Post: quote: Vladimir Sergeevich Syromyatnikov, 73, the veteran Russian space scientist whose docking system linked the Soviet Soyuz and the U.S. Apollo space capsules in the 1970s, a system that is still in use, died of leukemia Sept. 19 in Moscow.Mr. Syromyatnikov worked for Energia Space Research Corp. in the space program since before Sputnik first orbited the Earth. He updated the design of his docking system in the 1990s for the meeting of the Mir space station and the Atlantis shuttle at the international space station. His highly reliable electromechanical systems, which included the Androgynous Peripheral Assembly System, the proper name of the docking system, in addition to onboard manipulators and reusable solar arrays, are among the jewels of the Russian space program.

It should be noted that Syromyatnikov wrote his memoirs a short while ago. They were published in English and in Russian in a Moscow based publishing house.Tassi Römisch of Space Services International still has signed copies of it for sale. http://space-service-intl.com Jürgen

Jürgen,I can't read Mr. Römisch's website... Would you be kind enough to tell me how to order the book and the price? If you could tell us in a nutshell what else is of interest for collectors at space-service-intl, I and probably others would appreciate.

Francois,I don't think Tassi has his offers on his website. You might just want to e-mail him and ask for an offer. He also has a lot of other books for sale. Also portrait prints of most if not all of the cosmonauts at 2 Euro a piece. Tassi speaks good English and Russian, so there should not be a problem. Juergen
