This email below was read out on the documentary Astronaut Diaries. Until a few weeks ago I never really listened to it. But it is a very emotional email and I can't seem to get parts of it out of my head. Although most of you have probably heard it I just wanted to share it with all of you. Just sit back and think of Dave brown at a lap top station on orbit writing this on January 31st 2003 looking
Back on his flight. The crew members of STS 115 coming back today must have written something similar yesterday. They were together longer that STS 107. I hope you enjoy it.

Gareth

Friends.

It’s hard to believe but it’s coming up on sixteen days and we land tomorrow. I can tell you a few things. Floating is great. At two weeks it really started to become natural. At first we were still handing each other things, but now we just pass them with a little push. We loose stuff all the time. I'm kinda prone to this on earth, but it's much worse here. It is hard to remember to look everywhere when you loose something. Not just down. The views are really beautiful. If you've ever seen a space IMAX movie, that’s really what it looks like. My crew mates are like family. It will be hard to leave them after being so close for two and a half years. I will make one more observation. If I’d been born in space I would know I would have a desire to visit the beautiful earth more than I’d ever yearn to visit space. It is a wonderful planet.

Dave

That’s a wonderful email. Thanks for posting it. I have also found Dave Brown’s comments at the end of the STS-107 flight day 16 (Blue Team) wake-up call to be particularly poignant as well.

We’ve got a busy day as we finish up our science today and we’re also starting some activities to come home. I think as much as we’ve enjoyed it up here, we’re also starting to look forward to seeing all the people back on earth that we miss and love so much.

Maybe we ought to send all the elected and self appointed leaders of the world into space for that vision and it would be a better place after they came back.

Or better yet.....leave them all there and start over.
