If I recall correctly, these were nurses who did a bed-rest experiment in the late 1970s to simulate the effects of weightlessness. I have some newspaper clippings from that experiment. |

Looks to be the main group of female test subjects that were a part of a series of Space Shuttle bio-medical research studies.The test project for the group of ladies were conducted in two or more test study groups, each with a duration of almost a month's time, at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, CA. The first test group was conducted from April 13 - May 10, 1977, with ten female test subjects. All ten signatures of the women participants are a part of my shuttle cover collections from the late 1970s. Some of the signers that I can identify from the autographed cover(s) are; Carol Pruit, Christine Smith, Mary Gerbino, Gloria Martinez, Rita McIntire, Wendy Heyman, and Charlene Johnson. Test Group 4 of the women test participants (45-55 age group) in Oct./Nov. 1978 were, to name those that I can; Barbara Goddard, Eleanor Belton, Mary Ellen Joseph, Bernice Robertson, and Joanne Walsh. |

Thank you to all that replied. I was hoping that perhaps some of these women had become astronauts at some later date. |

From my records and collection, I note that there were six Shuttle Bio-Medical/Bedrest Study Groups (three with male subjects, three with female subjects), with the 12 female nurses pictured above comprising the 1st group and were tested from mid-Sept. to Oct. 24, 1973. Collector interest in the Space Shuttle Program was just beginning and autographs of all 12 were pursued by some. I was able to acquire autographs from 11 of the 12 and one nicely signed cover, by Sylvia De Jong, is shown. Others pictured in the photo above were: Fran Cappa, Felicia Benton, Evelyn Parks, Carol Lee French, Judith Keeton, Marina Hammerstram, Bonnie Kultgen, Lorraine Schoen, Marsha Pack and Lucinda Zimmer. None became astronauts, nor likely cleaning ladies. The second Bio-Medical Test began on April 4, 1977 and ended on May 10, 1977 and involved ten female subjects. The second cover was nicely signed by all ten.  The final Bio-medical/Bedrest/Selection Criteria Study was comprised of nine female subjects, in the age group 55-65, and took place in April 1981. The nine female subjects all signed an Ames Research Center cacheted cover marking this Final Selection Criteria Study for Space Shuttle passengers. Over 100 individuals took part in these studies and surely their time and involvement contributed useful bio-medical information used later when the space shuttle began taking astronauts into space. |
