In Mike Mullane's book "RIDING ROCKETS" on pages 214-215 he mentions that Mike Smith was a backup pilot for previous shuttle flight and he almost flew that mission. What mission was this for and who would of have likely taken Mike Smith's place of STS-51-L? Anyone with information concerning this? Thank you!

The mission was 51-C -- the PLT on that crew, Loren Shriver, had a temporary medical condition that could have affected his qualification to fly. I don't believe the question of Smith's 51-L assignment came into play, since this was either prior to that, or early enough that he could have been replaced.... or simply flown both missions.
