I recall hearing, though not so vividly, a radio report way back in 1993(?) that former NASA astronaut Dan Barry was involved in a most bizarre accident.
It happened at an airport in League City, Texas. Apparently, a small plane Dan Barry was at the controls of was hit by a car whilst still on the runway. I could be wrong, but can anyone verify this ?

Yes, that happened. The owner of the plane is a good friend of mine.

It was the driver's fault, having taken a wrong turn and ended up on the taxiway unaware of the plane in her path.

The airport is now closed, but there was an outdoor gun range across the street. I was told there were signs asking the gunmen to not shoot the parachutists! I shot a few rounds there back in the 80's when the sign was supposedly there but never saw it. There weren't any jumpers floating in across the street that day anyway.....

curious of the direction of the shooters have to aim....backs faceing airport or aiming the same direction toward the airport?

...was there a land barrier or man-made wall as an obstruction so bullets hopefully doesn't harm the public beyond the range?

At the Clear Creek Gun Range we were shooting away from the airport. My hubby laughed when I told him about my previous post in this thread. He remembers the tin shed over our heads having bullet holes in it so he wondered about some of those that used the range. There was what I called the Bambi range a little down the way from the range my group shot at where the really big (and really loud) hunting rifles were shot. The warning sign could have been over there since they were more likely to have the power to inflict damage at the airport across the street.

I took off from that airport 21 years ago on my first and last single engine flight. It was called Houston Gulf airport from what I recall, on the south side of Clear Lake in League City. It was my last flight because my coworker pilot wanted to do stalls over Galveston Bay at night. One was a little too close to the then Gulf Oil refinery in Port Arthur.
