Yes, there are astronauts who read this forum. And sorry, but no, I cannot tell you who they are. |

I know there is at least one pre-Shuttle astro who has read this message board. He sent a congratulatory email to a friend of mine who had posted something here. |

I've had an email from the wife of an Apollo era astronaut based on a post here. |

I have sent Carpenter threads, probably about five, that I think might interest him. I cannot say that he reads them with any interest.A lot of my phone calls to him, or to my mother, start, after the usual pleasantries, with "Over on collectSPACE there's a question about . . ." And we hash things out. The most recent thread I actually sent Carpenter was one on Barber's Point and any NA overlap during the Korean war. "Who is Duke of Url?" was his first comment. This was difficult, because then I had to sing the song, explain the joke--"well, it's 'Earl' in the song but 'URL' in the screen name . . ." only to trail off lamely. Of course, Carpenter then has to ask, "What does URL mean?" The house at the moment was filled with techies installing the new TV surround sound and Comcast system, including techie DH, while I'm singing "Duke of Earl" into the telephone in a patient explanation of online personalities at cS. And NO ONE knows what URL means. "It's like an address, Dad. An online address . . ." He was nonplussed at my manifest ignorance. So, yes, Carpenter's reaction to cS is mostly quizzical, which I think is a generational quirk. But he tells me he meets "lots of people" who report reading what I post here, which he says he finds gratifying. |

From what I've read, I don't think there is any easy way to explain the Duke...And I mean that as a compliment! ------------------ "The best leaders inspire by example. When that is not an option, brute intimidation works pretty well, too." - Anonymous |

Ms. Stoever,It's "U"niform "R"esource "L"ocator (or if you're Canadian, Ree-zource with the accent on zource). That's the first part of a web address. HTTP is the URL that tells your computer it's going to get a web page. Good thing I used "Duke Of URL". Imagine what he would have said if I copped a name from a Zappa tune. And if you ever mention the Duke to the Old Man again, please tell him I've been in awe of him since forever. He was my favorite astronaut when I was a kid and one of the few who understood what space exploration - as opposed to space flight - was all about. One of the reasons NASA has floundered is that the explorers like Carpenter were purged by the fliers. I mean that and I'm not kissing up. However, regardless of the fact your Old Man is a "dynamic pioneer", I STILL have more ex-wives than he does (either one or two depending on how you count 'em). |

I would think that any astronaut who has appeared at Novaspace or has placed part of his collection of space memorabilia in an auction (Superior, Swann, Aurora, Christies, etc.) would have frequently viewed this website. |

Not always - I know some who do not. But I do know some who do, and who are on the astronauts group list as well. |

For that matter, how do we know that some of these ambigious screen names aren't actually astronauts?Myself, I've always thought that "ColinBurgess" character has to be a pseudonym. I mean, can there be multiple Australians that interested in space? Clearly, this is none other than Andy Thomas in disguise! ------------------ http://allthese worlds.hatbag.net/space.php "America's challenge of today has forged man's destiny of tomorrow." - Commander Eugene Cernan, Apollo 17 Mission, 11 December 1972 |

Shannon just called out from the kitchen where she's boiling up some lobster thermidor in plastic packs and told me to respond by saying that my middle initials actually stand for So What?!!I'm not saying anything else, Dave, except that your roof - even from 200 miles up - really looks like it badly needs some shingle repairs. Hey. I can see my house on a local/area GIS/Space phtography site because of the PATCH on the roof my brother-in-law put on it several years ago. It CONFIRMS that what I am looking at was what I thought I was looking at.GB |

Indeed! An amazing career you have had, Colin, from rock drummer to space historian. I have to say, however, I'm glad you retired the leather pants...FF |

Quoting the pilot of Aurora 7 during reentry, "Oh, I hope not!"LOL, Duke, and happy holidays, one and all. Carpenter was then channeling Jose Jimenez, during reentry, in response to WHAT line? Colin? Francis? The line? I haven't heard the audio on Mark Gray's Mercury DVD set, which I AM buying, but look forward to hearing my dad's delivery of this very funny line. I can hear the intonation in my head. [This message has been edited by KC Stoever (edited December 30, 2005).] |

Hey:Dave Scott reads this forum. Yup, that's my name. But I am not THAT Dave Scott... I just happen to share a name. Sometimes the mixups when I phone someone space releated are comical. Dave Scott (not the astronaut) |

A possibility that has been overlooked...There may also be cosmonauts that read this site. Some of the cosmonauts collect as well, some even speak English better than I can speak Russian! The Russian internet is still relatively small (but growing fast), and nothing like CS exists with news, resources, and a forum of this magnitude all on one site. There are a couple of good news sites, scattered smaller pages for specific types of collections, archive libraries (.html), simple museum related pages and some general forums in the form of guestbooks. It only stands to reason there are a few cosmonauts viewing this site! |
