I met him tonight at the Hayden Planetarium where he gave a wonderful talk about the effort to develop technology to intercept asteriods.
He did sign a few items for people at the end of the evening but the rudeness of some of the people and the amount of items they gave him to sign clearly made it unpleasant for him. Most of them don't even say thank you. It makes it bad for the rest of us but here, I know I am "preaching to the choir." |

Its no wonder that some people have stopped signing (in public). Politeness and courtesay costs nothing but some of these people clearly have no such scruples.

At the dinner at the UACC show in NJ, there was a person at my table who actually bragged about following around Neil Armstrong, and after asking him for an autograph, this person bragged about Armstrong "throwing" it at him. This is also the same person who felt it necessary to tell us that he had 80 Armstrong autographs, or as he said, "That's eight-zero." Who can blame these astronauts for not wanting to give their autogrpahs with jerks like these out there????Chris Scheer |

Was this the UACC dinner where guests dined with astronauts? Please tell me this guy wasn't actually bragging about having 80 Neil Armstrong autographs in front of another astronaut ... If so, who was the astronaut and what was his reaction? |

Why not "name and shame" this jerk? If you know his name, let's hear it! Maybe being ostracised might get him to wise up. |

Blackarrow, I thought about it, but I really don't think it would be wise. If this guy is not shamed by having Armstrong throw an autograph at him, one post by little ol' me surely won't do it either. My only purpose in bringing this incident up is for those who think ill of those astros who do not freely give their signatures. I feel it is a priviledge to meet these heros, and I am lucky to obtain an autograph they want me to have. For those who do not give their autograph, I believe this is their right, and they probably have a very good reason. I do think, however, for every jerk like this, there are probably 10 or more like us who really appreciate the astronauts. Chris Scheer |

...besides, he's probably full of .um.. Hot Air, let's say. I cant see Neil doing that, nor does this guy have 80 ( thats Eight-Zero ) Neil autographs. Just my opinion.. |

Yes, I'd also be interested to know the name of this virgin... er... I mean, person. Anyone obnoxious enough to brag like that publicly in a group deserves no consideration.

I was thinking the same thing as John when I first read this topic. This guy was probably full of bull flop and thought he would impress people with his eighty Armstrong autographs. Wrong he is to think he could impress this lot with his chest thumping. This guy is too juvenile to impress anyone about anything. ------------------

Hi all,
I think at the end of the day all astronauts should be treated with the respect and decorum they deserve,because after all they are just as down to earth as we are and i remember a conversation i had with Scott Carpenter once where he said he found it fascinating that people are still interested in this era of history and the contribution he made to it.
And through my own experiance recently when i was at the Kennedy space centre where i got to meet John Blaha,but before i went up to meet him i readied my item for him to autograph when out the blue the Kennedy space centre P.R. reminded us NO AUTOGRAPHS which i respected,but sadly some people suddenly developed hearing problems and STILL badgered Mr. Blaha and this sadly ruins it for us and i totally agree with Machbusterman that manners are free and do not cost anything  .

I agree with ApolloAlex. I think astronauts should be treated with the dignity and respect then deserve. I also had a similar experience when I attended the 2001 AHOF induction. I asked Bob Crippen for his autograph, but security then said no autographs, which I respected. But, there were those there who didn't respect that, and it made it harder for those of us who do use good manners. I've thought long and hard about this, and I have decided to not reveal on this forum who the person was. I do not feel it would benefit us, because this person probably is the sort that does not care what we think anyway. We, the responsible and respectful autograph collectors, have in my opinion a duty to be as courteous as possible to the astros in the hope that when they do run into the rude person like the one I mentioned, they will not be too put off. I believe everyone who has posted on this thread is indeed a responsible and respectful collector. Personally however, I feel I would be stooping to this person's level by revealing who he is. He *knows* who is, and if he has taken the time to read this post, he knows what we, the general collecting public, think of him. That should be enough. Thanks to everyone for your emails. |

We must obviously respect your decision not to "name and shame" the jerk, but I think you may have missed the point. I have no doubt that he doesn't care what other people think about him. I just think it would be helpful for the rest of us to know who he is so we can choose to set him straight if we meet him, or avoid him. If I found myself sitting next to him, I would rather know. |

IMHO, Your decision is not "classy", I think you're allowing this "collectors" rude and obnoxious behavior to be rewarded, rather than modified. If he's the type of guy who doesn't care what the members of this board think, then what's the harm in telling us who he is. This "collectors" rude behavior is hurting everyone who goes out of their way to treat others with respect.All you've done, by electing not to tell us, is allowing him to continue his ways. When your child does something wrong, don't you show him/her the correct way to behave? Granted this jerk isn't your child, but when you see something blatantly wrong, isn't it everyone's duty to speak up? It's your choice not to tell, but all you're doing is allowing this "collector" to keep right on ruining the hobby and that hurts everyone. Ray ------------------

Let me know and I can maybe set the guy up with a few of my ex-wives. "Eight-Zero" will be the number of dents they put on his head. (As a matter of fact, "Eight-Zero" is a perfect nickname for the guy. If you point him out by that name to cS individuals, word gets around without you actually saying "Valerie Plame".)
