Novosti Kosmonavtiki is reporting the death of cosmonaut Pavel Popovich. He flew on Vostok 4 and Soyuz 14. Rest in peace.

collectSPACE: Pavel Popovich, sixth man in orbit, dies

The sixth man to orbit the Earth, Pavel Romanovich Popovich died Wednesday, five days before his 79th birthday. According to officials in Russia, his death came following a stroke at a hospital in Gurzuf on Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula.

"Pavel was a wonderful person," recalled first woman in space Valentina Tereshkova, in an interview with RIA Novosti. "A professional cosmonaut, devoted to his work, and he was also a good friend."

One of my boyhood heroes is gone. Rest in peace, sir. And thank you for your contribution to advancing and improving the human experience, even during the days when our two nations were foes. May God speed, Pavel Romanovich Popovich!

I am struck again by how the Vostok cosmonauts are passing away in strict order of flight:
  • Gagarin - 1968
  • Titov - 2000
  • Nikolayev - 2004
  • and now Popovich - 2009

Rest In Peace... it's so sad to see that we have lost yet another one of these early space pioneers.

I had the honor of meeting Pavel Popovich in 1996 in Ottawa and again in 1998 in Brussels. The thing about him that stood out the most to me was his sense of humor. Another loss of a true space pioneer.

These cosmonaut passings aren't any easier to take than our own American hero's passings.

As a tribute to Vostok 4 Cosmonaut, Pavel Popovich, here is a scan of a first anniversary launch cover autographed by him.

There's a prominent obituary of Popovich in The Times newspaper today.

It is probably not apparent from the web version, but Pavel Popovich's obituary occupies a full page of today's "Times." A fitting tribute to one of the great pioneers.
