Female astronauts gather to honor Sally Ride and her legacy

NASA recently released this photo, originally taken on Sept. 17, 2012, from a gathering of 22 of its current and former female astronauts and the first female director of Johnson Space Center, who met together in Houston to honor the late Sally Ride and her legacy.

Below, seated (from left): Former Johnson Space Center director Carolyn Huntoon and astronauts Ellen Baker, Mary Cleave, Rhea Seddon, Anna Fisher, Shannon Lucid, Ellen Ochoa and Sandy Magnus. Standing (from left): Jeanette Epps, Mary Ellen Weber, Marsha Ivins, Tracy Dyson, Bonnie Dunbar, Tammy Jernigan, Cady Coleman, Janet Kavandi, Serena Aunon, Kate Rubins, Stephanie Wilson, Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger, Megan McArthur, Karen Nyberg and Lisa Nowak.

Great photo! Some of these women were great sources of inspiration to me as a young girl, so it's great to see them all together and happy.

But also remember the female astronauts who already died as Sally Ride, Kalpana Chawla, Laurel Clark, Patricia Hilliard Robertson, Sharon McAuliffe, Judy Resnik and Janice Voss.

Very neat to see so many female astronauts gathered together - a very real and tangible celebration of the life, career and accomplishments of Sally Ride.

On a further note, I think it is great that Lisa Nowak is still included as NASA family (a fact that wasn't clear to me before this picture was first posted online) despite her public mistakes. Does anyone know if she is involved in the program outside of the Astronaut Office since her involuntary retirement from the US Navy?

Wow, I didn't pick up on that until you posted this. I wouldn't have thought they'd have had her there. I agree that it's good they included her anyway (though in all fairness, you have to wonder how accepting they were of her on a personal level as she really put a black eye on the program for a while and made NASA the butt of many late-night talk shows for a while).

It is entirely possible that a number of people, especially people who worked with Lisa Nowak personally, felt some sort of sympathy and/or compassion for her. I believe that her actions were those of someone who was mentally unwell. Unfortunately, the way mental health issues come to the fore are not always pleasant. I'm not condoning what she did by any means, but I think it's very likely that not everyone at NASA (or in the rest of her life) was so quick to totally denounce her.
