I could wait until someone from the Novaspace gang makes the official announcement, but patience was never a strong suit! I noticed on the Astronaut Central website that Mark Kelly will be doing a signing on December 15.

Any details? Is this a book signing (as I hear the book is coming out soon)? An open event like some previous book signings?

If you click on Mark Kelly's name on the Astronaut Central Page, the terms and signing fees will come up.

Yes, we're a little behind in getting all the paperwork ready. Rules, fees and order form are finished. We're still working on photos for sale.

The book will be out 11/15 (be sure to watch the Diane Sawyer interview) but there will be no book signing tour. Mark will sign a few for us. We're going give them – while they last – to buyers over $300.

Mark Kelly will be here Dec. 5 (Monday) and is going to sign what we have received by then, as he has to come to Tucson anyway for some business.

He is going to return Jan. 6 and do the rest.

Mark Kelly was here Monday and signed for a few hours. He did the same Tuesday.

He'll be by again the first week of January to sign anything else that's come in by then. Deadline for that signing is Jan. 2

Ooh thank you for this great news! Because of the holidays and all, I didn't get my order in on time, which I was bummed about. So now I have a chance! Hip hip hurray!

That reminds me, the holidays really slow down delivery times and pickup schedules, so get your orders here as soon as possible.

Deadline in three weeks!

Two more NASA posters just in of Mark Kelly's last two flights, STS-124 and 134. Nice movie-style, color, Space Flight Awareness posters, giclee-printed, 18x24.

Deadline for part two of Kelly signing: Jan. 2!

While the decision is up to Astronaut Central (aka Novaspace), I don't see there being a big demand for his signature at the moment. He is no longer front and center in the news, as he once was. Granted, a certain level of demand will always exist for his signature, but I think it has tapered off somewhat since 2011.

Indeed, a bigger demand may soon exist for Scott Kelly's signature, once he becomes the first American to spend over a year in orbit. (Mark Kelly will play a role in that effort too, as a "control" for any medical testing that is done on his brother, but Scott is likely to get the greater amount of attention.)

Except, as an active NASA astronaut (and government employee), could Scott Kelly take part in a paid signing? I think not.

I think there would be ways around it — earmarking the money for a licensed 501(c)3 charity, for example.

I don't know the laws, but it would make sense that he'd be fine as long as he doesn't actually profit off it.

If money changing hands over his signature in general is the issue, then no active astronaut would ever be able to sign anything for fear that it be sold.

All federal employees, astronauts included, are prohibited by law to use their position to monetarily benefit themselves or others, including charities.

Active NASA astronauts can only sign autographs for free, regardless of the circumstances.

In thinking about it, it makes sense. Ethics issues of profit aside, publicly supporting a charity by virtue of being a government employee could appear to be a show of government endorsement.

It does raise questions for me, though, when it comes to questions of charities that actually are endorsed by the government. Such rules don't seem appropriate in those cases, but, I suppose that, in terms of laws, it'd be tough to distinguish.
