I am planning on having an item signed by Frank Borman and just wanted an opinion from the boards as what might be the most desirable item to have signed. I have three lithos to pick from: 8x10 dress suit, 8x10 Apollo 8 "earthrise", and an 11x14 earthrise. The larger earthrise is same as smaller but grainier picture. Any input would be appreciated. |

I don't know if it would end up being the most valuable? But personally I would go for the 8x10 "Earthrise". You could perhaps always add Jim Lovell's autograph to that as well at a later date? |

I had an item signed in the last Borman Novaspace signing and went for the 10x8 Earthrise. It's an iconic image that he was directly connected to, and, as mentioned above, you might also be able to add Lovell at a later date if you are so inclined. |

Also, you have to look at your own collecting goals. Are you thinking about trying to complete a "set" of autographs (such as a set of signed portraits)? Or are you collecting signatures on iconic photos from each mission?Think about what you want your collection to ultimately be, then that should help you decide on what you need signed. |

The most desirable in my opinion is subjective. We can all offer suggestions but the most desirable is the image that appeals most to you .If I may turn the tables, which of the suggestions you have made do you prefer? You then have your answer. |

Good suggestion on possibly adding a Lovell signature. I ask this because these opportunities will become less and less very quickly, and would like to make the most it. I have been collecting for only a year or so and you don't know what you don't know! For example I attended Spacefest III this year and it was amazing. At the time I didn't fully appreciate how special it was to have Tom Stafford there. I got a WSS signature which I love, but should have gotten it on an Apollo 10 with Cernan. Could maybe complete it with a John Young at next Astronaut Central signing. |

I think you'll find as time goes on you will want all the various options. I started with WSS lithos, then moved on to moon shot lithos,Autopen lithos and unsigned lithos. I plan on getting an Earth rise litho signed by Borman. Probably in the top 5 most iconic pictures of all time. |

Another possible item to have signed is a print of a digital photo collage I put together in the summer of 2010. I made them for several astronauts to sign and then posted them on cS last year, thinking they might be handy for the ASF event that year. You'll see that the first three are for Gemini 7 and Apollo 8. I said that they might be good for Lovell to sign at ASF, but I had actually made them for Borman to sign earlier that year at Astronaut Central. See the little black and white picture of him in both of the Gemini 7 collages, and the color one of him in the Apollo 8 collage? If you click on any of the collages, you'll see a nice huge version. You can save that to your hard drive, then upload them to a photo printing service like mpix.com to have the prints made. Each of the collages tells the whole story of a mission if you read the photographs left-to-right, then down, then left-to-right, etc.: crew selection (that is, a crew photo), training, vehicle assembly, launch morning walk-out, lift-off, aspects of the mission, splashdown, and then some post-mission celebration. I also added a window with text detailing the mission. I liked making these, because they each contain at least two photos that were very interesting, but weren't available in high resolution. Putting them into these collages as just another one a few inches across made them usable. |

They use "Kodak's 200 year archival Supra Endura VC Digital and Endura Metallic" paper and inks. Isn't that pretty good? |

Interesting stuff. I'll have to try it on our own giclees. But it's still inkjet paper, and coated onto traditional paper. Inkjet coatings quickly wick away any moisture, which makes them difficult to sign, esepcially when a Sharpie sticks to it. |

For me it's no choice, Earthrise. When the ASF had the last Capt. Lovell mail-in signing, I went to Astronaut Central and bought a Borman signed 16x20 Earthrise. The photo is the highest quality and resolution I've seen of this image, and having Lovell sign and inscribe it made it a centerpiece of my collection. |

Earthrise for me too. I am debating the 16x20 size. I am glad to hear above that it is good quality and resolution. Now about displaying that size print, I am just not sure. |

I have the 16" x 20" signed by both Frank Borman and Jim Lovell. Although a great photo, when matted and framed it takes up a lot of space. But I do think it is worth it. |

I will definitely partcipate in this one. The base fee is $165 with no extras for completions or personalizations. This favorably compares with the $150 base fee the last time. More importantly, this is a charity signing with the proceeds to Col. Borman's foundation. Now all we need to do is persuade Col. Borman to come to Spacefest 4. |

I participated in the last Borman signing, but thought I'd be sitting this one out. But then I realized that I had a chance to get a pretty unique signed item.I own an Apollo 8 Earth Orbit Chart (third orbit of three). It contains a fascinating detail: over Hawaii, the line showing the planned track... ends. The spacecraft has left Earth orbit, for the first time in history. Here is an Earth Orbit Chart from Apollo 11 that is very similar. See what I mean about the track just ending at Hawaii? I would greatly appreciate your help in thinking of what inscription I should ask Col. Borman to write next to that TLI point. It needs to be brief (at $10 a word; 10 word maximum), accurate, and convey the historic importance. I was thinking of something like "Humans leave Earth for the first time." Or would that not be accurate, since even going into orbit should count as leaving Earth? Perhaps "The first voyage to the moon begins." Again, I will appreciate any help with this. |

I have an Apollo 8 item already signed by Anders and Lovell so I want Col. Borman to complete it. The shortest inscriptions I am considering are "First to Leave Earth" or "First to Lunar Orbit" or "First to the Moon." What do you think? |

I haven't seen the piece but I would seriously consider just adding a signature without inscription. I've not really seen many problem Apollo 8 items but I've seen too many Apollo 11 Armstrong signed items end up as messy and overcrowded crew-signed pieces because people have Aldrin add "MAGNIFICENT DESOLATION" or Collins add "APOLLO XI". Sometimes you have an Armstrong signature with "APOLLO 11" beneath it then people add Aldrin and Collins both with mission inscriptions as well. Err yeah, I think we know which mission they flew on from Armstrong's inscription! Maybe in your particular case the inscription is an opportunity not to be missed but don't do it if it doesn't suit the piece. |

How about something like, "Apollo 8, You are go for TLI?" Of course, then you would have to have it signed by Mike Collins, too, whom I believe was CapCom at that time. Whoops -- I replied to the wrong person -- this reply is for stsmithva! |

First to the Moon sounds great! Simple, dramatic, historic. That's what I would have him write. |

How about "Earthrise, Christmas 1968"This captions the photo, indicates that it occurred at Christmas time, and brings to mind all of the other issues concerning the world that were momentarily forgotten when this image gave us some perspective. $20-30, depending on if the date counts as a word. |

I paid around $550 or so for the Borman signature and inscription. I was fortunate because I spoke with the great folks at Novaspace/Astronaut Central in regards to my request and they said they would see what they could do. I believe the response I got back following that request was from Borman saying something like: "Why did I have to go and say all that back then" or something along those lines. It was worth every penny and will be framed once I find a nice Apollo 8 beta patch for the display that I have in mind. |

"Christmas Eve, 1968" was the inscription I asked for on my 16x20. After Lovell signed it, I said what the heck and had all astronauts who had seen that view who attended Spacefest III sign, so my Earthrise is now signed by: Borman, Lovell, Stafford, Aldrin, Bean, Gordon, Haise, Mitchell, Worden, Duke, Scott and Cernan. Not exactly the 'less is more' approach. But I love it. |

Okay, I have my order form filled out and was wondering this — do you guys use the box I send my items in to return them to me or do you use your own box? Just wondering if I'll need to use a halfway decent box and wrap it in brown paper to send it to you. Thanks. |
