Good news that we have a date for the event. It would be great to see any Mercury, Gemini and Apollo astronauts over but anyone or more of Jim Lovell, Dave Scott, Alan Bean or Gene Cernan would be superb.

Also after the success of the likes of Gerry Griffin and Jerry Bostick in recent times, any more from mission control would be superb.

To start off with, how about Glynn Lunney and Scott Carpenter?

There was much agreement that the inclusion of new shuttle astronaut guests was a huge success at Autographica 17.

So how about considering Colonel Eileen Collins, the first female pilot and first female commander of a space shuttle mission? Col. Collins is making a first guest appearance at an autograph show at the ASF Show Nov 4th - 6th 2011.

A group of us were talking with Jerry Bostick in the bar at the hotel and he said he thought that Gene Kranz would enjoy this kind of show and "would be up" for coming over to the U.K. He is in touch with him on a regular basis and was going to sound him out. He would be a great guest.

That would be great although Dave did mention a little while back on the Autographica forum that Gene Kranz had previously been invited to attend but had declined.

Still a friendly word from a former co-worker might help things along. From what he said in his talk on Sunday it was Fred Haise who helped talk Jerry Bostick into attending the show this time round!

I have heard the same; it would be quite a coup if they could pull it off.

For what its worth, Cernan and Lovell would get my vote too.

With a year to play with, I suggest that every effort is made to surpass all previous Autographica efforts to honour Project Apollo. I remember in 2001 one of the organizers telling me: "These guys aren't getting any younger..." A decade has passed since then!

It certainly won't be the last chance to bring Apollo astronauts over, but could I suggest a special effort to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the successful conclusion of the greatest peace-time enterprise in the history of the world? Let the goal be to have six moonwalkers: one from each of the six moonlanding missions.

Buzz Aldrin is supposed to be lined up already. Charlie Duke and Dave Scott have previously been happy to attend. That leaves Alan Bean, Ed Mitchell and Gene Cernan. All have attended before, all could be persuaded.

Let's have a supreme effort to make Autographica 18 "The Big One."

Gene Kranz attended the UACC Convention at San Antonio, Texas in 2006. This was a wonderful event organised by Sims and Hankow.

I remember the event being billed at the time as the one and only chance to get Gene's autograph at a show of this nature. While attending meetings such as ASE 40th anniversary of Apollo XIII, he has stuck rigidly to that statement for autograph shows.

As I recall, Gene Kranz also attended the autograph show at KSC in June 2007 which coincided with the launch of STS-117.

I agree with Blackarrow - let's hope that Autographica 18 is the best ever. I missed Cernan the last time he was here and would love the opportunity of meeting him. Bean would also be a very welcome returnee but it would be nice to see someone new. Borman, Collins, Schmitt what are the chances? One Apollo astronaut from each of 11 through 17 would be fabulous.

Well, maybe second best. For me, the best ever was in 2004 when Valentina Tereshkova and Valeri Bykovsky attended. It could be the best, however if any or all of the suggested astronauts attended.

That, and the (first time) Lovell-Haise show are definitely hard to beat. Sadly the "they aren't getting any younger" mantra came true with guests like Popovich and Nikolayev who are no longer with us. How glad I am that Autographica and the late Rex Hall gave us the chance to meet them.

Some excellent suggestions here. On my wish list are:

Russia:

  • Valeri Bykovsky
  • Valentina Tereshkova
  • Sergei Krikalyov (Krikalev depending on translation)
Apollo:
  • Eugene Kranz
  • Glynn Lunney
  • Christopher Kraft
  • Thomas Mattingly
  • Harrison Schmitt
Shuttle:
  • Joe Engle
  • Richard Truly
  • Joseph Allen
  • Karol Bobko
  • Story Musgrave
  • Frederick Hauck
  • Daniel Brandenstein
  • Ulf Merbold
  • George Nelson
  • Steven Hawley
  • Loren Shriver
  • Jerry Ross
  • Charles Bolden
  • Kenneth Bowersox
  • Robert Cabana
  • Eileen Collins
  • Steven Lindsey
  • Mark Kelly
  • Christopher Ferguson
  • Douglas Hurley

  • And John Glenn
There sure were a lot of shuttle flyers! I know several are extremely unlikely but can it hurt to ask?

I agree... Both the 2004 show in Coventry and the 2007 show with Lovell and Haise will be hard to top. The 2004 show, the most expensive guests were Duke, Mitchell and Worden at £25 each... Carpenter was £20, Bykovsky £10 and Tereshkova £15. At that show you could get one signature from all 6 space guests for £120.... and that was two moonwalkers, one Mercury astronaut, the first trans-earth deep space EVA astronaut and two Vostok cosmonauts!

New astronaut announcement on the Showmasters forum, Donald A. Thomas.

Two astronauts for the show already, can't be a bad thing!

I'm going to make it to Autographica one of these years. The trouble is, most of the time I'm short of bread - I really need to get to work on making my first million.

My ideal guest list for what it's worth:

  • Helen Sharman
  • Valentina Tereshkova
  • Alexei Leonov
  • Konstantin Feoktistov
  • Sergei Krikalev
  • Any and all surviving Apollo guys.
  • Eileen Collins
  • Bart Sibrel, so we can all point and laugh at him.
  • Gene Kranz
  • Any of those old-time British rocketeers still knocking around who were involved in the Black Arrow and Blue Streak programmes. It's about time they had a round of applause.
  • Burt Rutan
Actually, my potential guest list could outnumber the people paying to attend, which isn't exactly commercially viable!

They might have just a little trouble getting Feoktistov there as he died in 2009.

I hadn't heard that, I thought he was still alive. That's a shame, I'm sure he'd have been an interesting guest.

One other guy I forgot to put on my list - Mike Mullane. I read his book recently and I'm sure he'd make an entertaining speaker.

Just for those that look at the Showmasters forum for guest announcements, don't get too over excited when you see that John Glen has been announced. I saw the name and thought "how wonderful even if they did spell his name wrong" but found moments later when I clicked into the post that they did spell his name right and the announcement was for Bond film director John Glen!

There's also a director named Paul Weitz. I had the same reaction when I saw he was scheduled for a presentation at the Times Center in NYC in a few weeks.

I've been keeping half an eye on that as well, at first I just assumed it was an mistake connected to last years show, but it's stayed on there so long I am starting to wonder now.

I don't share your enthusiasm David! Aldrin has been over here at least four times, Mitchell was here last year. Gordon was at Autographica a few years ago, so I doubt if there are many people who haven't met them?

In my opinion, the Friday night at Autographica is just the best such event open to UK enthusiasts: anyone who has attended would agree...

I think most of my customers feel that meeting these legends (even if for the second or third time!) is a chance too good to miss.

I can empathise with johnpslaters point of view. But many of us can remember the days before Autographica. When you might hear of an occasional astronaut visit to the UK, usually the day after it happened in a national newspaper.

In the 25 years prior to Autographica I met only 2 astronauts, and missed out on meeting Buzz Aldrin and Jim Irwin courtesy of the old newspaper saga mentioned above.

Yes, some of the guys have been here before but it is still an honour to meet them and I will continue to do so for the few remaining years that is possible to do so.

There is room on the calendar for both events.

Let's face it, we are not exactly swamped with Apollo astronauts here in the UK. Sad to say, in the next 5 to 10 years... possibly sooner, the debate over which events to attend in the UK will be academic.

There will be some, even on this site who will regret not spending a few quid to attend all these events when they had the opportunity to do so and will in time consider them as unique opportunities squandered.
