It looks like Novaspace has posted a date for their next Spacefest on their website -- Feb. 19-22, 2009 in San Diego.

Golfing? Will we be able to play 18 holes with an astronaut?

We're just setting up design and layout for the coming Spacefest. What you see on the one page site does not necessarily indicate anything in fact. I did not really intend to release any information at this point as we are still in the early planning phase. Links on the page go nowhere--I just made some stuff up to see how the pages will look.

The San Diego resort does feature a full golf course, several restaurants, a spa and spacious meeting rooms. We are looking forward to another successful event, but we have a lot of work to do yet.

Thanks for your interest.

Certainly, you must assume that we are watching everywhere for any news, as we are all on pins and needles waiting for the next big event. If you post it - we are going to talk about it.

I would almost bet that some have been calling hotels in San Diego to get information.

Hi, I'm kinda glad that the cat is out of the bag. I had to keep my mouth closed for so long and Kim has given me his OK to put my thoughts here. I was the one that suggested Kim to go to this resort. Originally, Kim was thinking about the San Diego Convention Center, but it was too expensive. The size of the SDCC is geared towards ComicCon and the automobile shows. After going to Spacefest last year, I suggested a smaller venue. It in a nice area, near one of the major freeways here in San Diego. You can go to SeaWorld, the Zoo/Wildpark, the Gaslamp district and the airport in a short amount of time. The resort is right next to a golf course and just down the street is a major shopping mall, Fashion Valley. I'm glad that Kim took my advice and I hope it will be a great show.

Good things will come to those who wait.

Well this is good news. It is close to my Mom's house. I guess she is going to see a lot of me next Feb.

There are countless hotels in that area too. Something for every pocketbook.

Andrew from LJ? I was Vikingdoug (LJHS) for three years before I was Aztecdoug (SDSU)... seems like a long time ago. At least both schools colors were the same, Red and Black.

This rocks! Now to start saving up!

Ok, here's a little more information. Spacefest will be held at Town and Country Resort & Convention Center in San Diego. Our room rate will be $149 a night, but you can't book your reservations yet.

Hi Doug, you went to La Jolla High School, huh? What year? I'm actually here at UCSD, so blue and gold for me.

The weather here is 60 degrees and sunny!

Almost forgot, for those of you who are really into golfing, you can always go up to Torrey Pines, about 15 min drive from Town and Country and play where Tiger Woods plays. I don't know what the fees are there, but can check it out for you all.

Let's not forget about the Midway Museum, Miramar Naval Air Station, Creation Museum in Santee (that is biblical creationism), amazing views of the bay from the Cabrillo National Monument, watching the ships go by from the grass on Shelter Island, having the chance to poke fun at San Diegans because their big mouth QB didn't win in the playoffs (sorry about the personal swipe), and a whole bunch more. Bravo to you guys for the venue.

If you haven't been to the San Diego Aerospace Museum you're in for a great surprise! Surprised no one has mentioned the Apollo command module in the lobby or all the other Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo items on display.

Yes, the Apollo 9 command module is located at the Air and Space Museum. Kim tells me that he is in contact with Francis.

I'm not going to let the dogs out this time - but you should check out the Spacefest site. There is new information up including an astronaut listed for the show, and some nice videos of last years show.

Registration for Spacefest 2009 is up on their website. There are different packages; the top one was already sold out by the time I registered.

The website also adds Charlie Duke, Scott Carpenter, Jack Lousma and test pilot Gen. Cardenas to the speakers.

It should be a great show-- especially in San Diego, one of my favorite cities, when it is winter here in the cold, snowy Midwest.

I am planning to attend Spacefest 2009 in San Diego. Is any other collectSPACE members planing to attend this event for the four days?

Also, how far is the San Diego Air & Space Museum from where Spacefest will be located. It would be neat to get together with other members of collectSPACE and talk about space/NASA.

Also, I am a firefighter and does anyone know where the fire station is that was used for the television show EMERGENCY during the 1970's? I was told it was in the San Diego area? I would like to drop by it and take a photo of it. That was the show that got me interested in the Fire/EMS services.

Does anyone know how many astronauts will be scheduled for Spacefest? I know that there is 9 listed now but how many total will be there and any ideas on who they might be? Any chances for cosmonauts? Thank you.

Any information will be greatly helpful concerning both topics. Thank you.

By freeway and without traffic, it would only take 10 minutes to get to the SDASM from Spacefest. It's about 5 miles away.

I'm sure Francis would be very happy to show you around.

As to the location of the fire station where Emergency was filmed, I believe it's closer to Los Angeles/Long Beach rather than San Diego. Here is a website for more info.

Hope this helps!

To my fellow collectSPACE members in San Diego, California area are there any other hotels within two miles of the Spacefest 2009 event in February 2009? I was looking for hotels within a different price range but within walking distance to the convention site for Spacefest. Any information will be very helpful. Thank you very much!

Hi, Spacefest is going to be held in an area called Hotel Circle, which means there are plenty of hotels and motels. On either side of the freeway, 8.

These include: Days Inn, Comfort Inn, Ramada, Travelodge, Double Tree, Vagabond, and Motel6 to name a few. Just do a search for Hotel circle, San Diego if these are still not in your price range.

Hope this helps,
Andrew

I am hoping that "The Wonder of it All," will be showing at Spacefest again. I was unable to see it the first time around and it would be great to see the movie with all the Moonwalkers in person that appear in it.

I sure would like to see "The Wonder of it All" at Spacefest. There is just a special feeling to see that film and then meet those would actually walked on the moon, in person. It is the closest some of us will ever come to being there!

I sat next to Jim at Autographica he was a great dinner guest and was most talkative at the table.

If you can sit with him at the dinner you will enjoy 100%. A night to remember for a long time.

We've booked Dr. Peter Smith, head honcho for the Phoenix-Mars lander, Dr. Al McEwen, whose Mars Reconaissance Orbiter snapped Phoenix parachuting toward Mars, and #1 comet discoverer Dr. Carolyn Shoemaker, as Spacefest speakers.

We'll be raising most ticket prices soon. Galactic ticket packages almost sold out, but we'll have some Moonwalker Invitational golf tourney ticket packages soon.

We'll also have an Apollo 9 crew 40th anniversary reunion at Spacefest. Rusty Schweickart will fly in from Vienna, where he is testifying for the UN on the near-earth asteroid menace. He already was instrumental on a bill passed by the house recently funding NASA for that purpose. Rusty will join crewmaes Jim McDivitt and Dave Scott. They'll be sitting together at the autograph show. Photo opp?

Their Apollo 9 capsule, "Gumdrop" is the featured artifact at the San Diego Air & Space Museum, our co-sponsors for Spacefest 2009. Wow.

Stand by for more!

I just noticed that Hank Hartsfield has been added to the list.

Hank frequently attends philatelic shows as he is an avid stamp collector (Austria, I believe, is one of his specialties). Many years ago he spoke briefly at a meeting of the Space Unit (space stamp and cover collectors) at one of the shows. He was quite friendly and generous with his autograph--a good guy.

I received an email this evening regarding his fees:

His fee will be $250 for the first two items. His regular $295 after that, up to 5 items. No inscriptions, no covers. Completions TBD.

To save the fine folks at Novaspace much valuable time answering the same question, "Mission inscriptions OK" with Mike Collins at Spacefest.

Also, Borman declined attending citing he prefers signing privately with Novaspace.

Thanks.
