On Saturday, March 25 at 2:00 p.m., collectSPACE will present a panel discussion with the author and four of the contributors to the new book, Apollo Moon Missions: The Unsung Heroes.

The event, which will take place at the Clear Lake City-County Freeman Branch Library, will include:

  • journalist/author Billy Watkins;
  • Apollo 13 astronaut Fred Haise (who wrote the book's foreword);
  • the wife of the late Apollo 14 Command Module Pilot Stuart Roosa, Joan Roosa and their daughter Rosemary Roosa;
  • Gemini and Apollo spacesuit technician Joe Schmitt; and
  • Apollo mission planner Rodney Rose
Immediately following the one hour presentation, the panel guests will take part in a buySPACE/Countdown Creations-organized book signing of Apollo Moon Missions.

Seating is limited and is offered on a first-come, first-serve basis. Books will be available for purchase at the library.

You can read about the book here.

Unfortunately, we learned today that Joan Roosa will not be able to join us on March 25 for the panel discussion or book signing. Her daughter Rosemary however, still plans to attend and though she is not the focus of her mother's chapter in Apollo Moon Missions: The Unsung Heroes, she is thanked by author Billy Watkins in the book's acknowledgements for her "encouragement and help."

As Watkins himself puts it, "There are (at last count) only 65 people out of billions in the world who can say 'My daddy went to the moon. What did your daddy do?'"

Our intention is to make (at the least) the audio available from the discussion afterwards (how soon after is still unknown). If possible, we may be able to provide video as well.

Thanks again to Robert and collectSPACE for another wonderful event! All four panelists (Fred Haise, Rosemary Roosa, Joe Schmitt, and Rodney Rose), plus author Billy Watkins were fantastic.

After Billy was introduced by Robert, he introduced the four panelists, and then each of them spoke for about 10 minutes summarizing for the capacity crowd their contribution to the moon program. Then the panel accepted questions, and although I lost track of time, the Q&A session must have lasted for 30 minutes.

Then the book signing was next. My favorite story of the day (from Fred); Jack Swigert on Apollo 13 was a CM specialist, substituted onto the Apollo 13 crew two days before launch (because Ken Mattingly was exposed to measles). So Jack had never been in a LM before, and the LM was a different beast from the CM. The LM had thin skin; pumps could be heard running and making all kinds of noises. Compared to the LM, the CM was a battleship. After the CM was powered down and Jack moved into the LM, he deadpanned "do you think this thing will make it?" And the rest is history.

Thanks Mel! I'm glad you had a good time, as I hope everyone who attended did as well. I know the panel participants were happy to see everyone and share their experiences and stories.

The panel was filmed and I hope to turn that around quickly so that others here will be able to either see, hear or at least read what was said.

In the meantime, here are a couple of photos from the event. In the first picture, from left to right: Fred Haise, Rosemary Roosa, Rodney Rose, Joe Schmitt and Billy Watkins.

All times are CT (US)
