Hello Everyone,

After several months of planning, we have finalized arrangements for the 2005 UACC Convention/Autograph Show. It will be held just outside of New York City on 8/13 – 8/14/2005. We expect it to be another blockbuster show. First details are now posted to our show site at:
www.autographshows.net.

Please bookmark the show page because as you all know, we update frequently as information becomes available.

As I did last year, I’m encouraging those of you planning on joining us at the banquet on Saturday evening, to purchase your tickets as early as possible. I expect they will be offered within the next several days as we are in the process of formalizing the menu at this time. I repeat…we are NOT accepting reservations at this time but will let you know as soon as the “light turns green”.

Hotel information is also posted to our show site and wanted to mention that reservations at our discounted rate are not available until 12/1. If our room block should become available sooner, I’ll advise you via another email. More to follow in the days to come!!!

Nolan and I look forward to seeing many of you there!!

Best,

Steve Hankow

This news is great. A wonderful location to hold the show. I have been to many events there and am always pleased. Lots of parking, close proximity to NYC and my house in NJ!

Steve & Nolan,

I can't wait, I'm making my plans now and if it's 1/2 as good as Burbank, it will be a spectacular event, again.

Can you tell me if you're going to be arranging tours to places like the LM museum at Bethpage, USS Intrepid or the Aerospace museum?

Thanks, Ray

Are looking at some optional side events but is a too early at this point to provide any solid information. I promise to post the info as soon as things are a bit more developed.

Hey Steve,
How about inviting Mike Melvill and Brian Binnie to attend the show and sign autographs? I think alot of CollectSpace members , including myself, would enjoy meeting them.

Great idea. And how about a Skylab reunion with the 8 remaining Skylab astros?

Valentina Tereshkova and A.Leonov would be great since we're throwing around suggested names. Just my personal op. but there's not enough female astro/cosmonauts at these events.

I did not figure it would take long before people started to make a "wish list". In addition to the people that made up the show last year I would like to see Frank Borman attend. I have something that I would like to have Jack Schmitt sign also.

Another thought might be if Ron Howard and Tom Hanks could attend. Ron and Clint Howard wrote the forward in Sy's book and I would like to add there signatures to Apollo EECOM.

How about Mike Cassutt. He is the co-author of Deke and of We Have Capture.

Andrew Chaikin might be another idea. Can you tell I am interested in signed books??

And while we're throwing names around, why not invite the astronauts who either were born in or now live in New Jersey or the New York metropolitan area?

Ok..you had it in LA (the left coast) this year, and next year your gonna have it in NYC (the right coast). How about bringing the show to Oklahoma City (right smack in the middle) in 2006...

If you are going in the middle you should go to Ohio where we are known for flight. It should be easy to get John Glenn to show up and maybe you can convince the other well known space guy around here to show up.

I will put in a vote for the midwest. Oklahoma City would be fine but don't forget about Houston. Large city with an internation airport and I think Houston had something to do with the space program? I seem to remember reading something about it.

12 hours away for me but still closer than the coasts are.

Houston isn't a bad idea..that's only 7 hours away for me plus you'll have alot of access to astronauts since most live in that area. Oklahoma City wouldn't be a bad choice as far as Oklahoma astronauts. We've got General Stafford's museum about 1 hour away. Shannon Lucid's hometown is right here as well. Another idea would be to bring it here to OKC in 2007 during our centennial. That's when we are optimistically shooting for our Challenger Learning Center grand opening...

I would encourage all of you to jump on the opportunity to get a gold pass while you still can. You will never regret it. If something comes up between now and the show which would mean you couldn't attend, you should easily be able to sell it.

For the extra $75 it's a bargain.

My previous Gold pass got me into a reception before the Burbank signings began. It was an informal gathering where the celebrities outnumbered us minions. Good food and drink, and the chance to casualy speak with men who walked on the Moon.

I also was able to get into the autograph show long before regular ticket holders. I didn't have to stand in that long line that formed an hour before the doors opened. I had the opportunity to talk to a few of the astronauts and dealers, check out all the offerings at each of the tables, and get in line at Buzz Aldrins table. I was number three... so Buzz was truly nice and full of enthusasm when we met.

I also got to pick exactly the person I wanted to have dinner with. That time around it was Dave Scott. I've seen "Dinners with an Astronaut" sell for many hundreds of dollars at auctions. Here's your chance to take your pick, for less than the cost of an autograph.

These gold tickets are just about the best bargain going.

Noah

Picking names out the hat for next years show, Paul has hit it on the nail with a Skylab reunion. What about some of the X-15 Guys. I'm sure they can pull in the crowd.
Ian.

hey I've chalked up 300 hits. I'd be even happier hitting 300 not out in the Ashes against the Aussies next summer ( lol )

Ian,

Whilst I'm not connected in any way with the X-15 pilots I don't think any of the surviving pilots would attend a show where a charge would be made for autographs... whether it be for their's or for others. Scott Crossfield signs freely just about whenever he attends a function (and TTM) and doesn't stop until there's no-one in the queue. Bill Dana signs freely TTM and at events such as SETP, AWOH and GOE. Bob White (I think Al H would back me up on this) won't sign at any event apart from the SETP, AWOH and GOE, certainly not at an event where fee's are charged for autographs. This would only leave Joe Engle and whilst I've never had any success with him so far I don't think he'd be inclined to attend an event where autograph fee's are charged either. If you want to meet these guys, better off attending the SETP, AWOH or FTHF's Gathering of Eagles.

As one who's been to the GOE in Lancaster, I can highly recommend a trip to California to attend that event. I flew out last year for a 5 day long weekend and it was one of the most wonderful weekends of my life. I tell you, when you become friends with some of these test pilots and they get to know you it really enrichen's your life. I had breakfast with Col. Joe Cotton 3 days running and even drove him out to the Aviation collectibles shop in Lancaster just so he could take a look around... and thats an experience you just CAN'T buy!!

You are correct Derek. There are 5 living X-15 jocks left. Lets do them 1 x 1.

Armstrong: Sorry, it took me so long to quit laughing when I was typing, it took a while to finish. Cracks me up to see some of these wish lists, but we can all dream. <G>

Crossfield: Will not get involved in a commerical venture.

Dana: Same. Plus has some medical problems (nothing serious or life threatening) that might preclude travel.

White: DISDAINS commercial ventures, purely and simply.

Engle: Same same.

All but Engle are wonderful through the mail, and all are excellent in person. Well, except for Armstrong. <G>

See the thing is, these guys are against signing a fee to sign an autograph, and while they would never criticize those who do, they won't even appear anywhere for a charity that is commercial.

NOT just the X-15 guys.

Nice one Mike
I was just happy to get in double figures in my cricketing day .
Derek , Al of course your right about the X-15 jocks. We all know about Armstong, but as a wish list MY wish list (IMO) Engle would be a big catch for the show if he was approched right. Who would have thought Rusty would be signed up for Burbank this year.
Thanks again guys

Ian,

Sure, no-one could have forseen Rusty signing up for Burbank but I'd lay money on it that it will be the only time he'll ever do an autograph show..

Approaching Engle from any direction would lead to the same response... No way Jose!! Its just never gonna happen. As I said, if you want the chance to meet some of these guys, attend either of the events I mentioned earlier. They'll happily sign for you at all of those events if you ask them nicely.

Robert,

By Autograph show I was referring to an organised autograph event such as the Air and Space Show, Autographica or the Sims/Hankow events... I had forgotten about him attending your event. Sorry!

Steve,

By my post that was said somewhat tongue in cheek.... I don't gamble (not even the lottery) but I stand by what I said... I think your event this year will be the last autograph show he does... and no, I don't have insider information

If you have him booked already then clearly I'm wrong... So who have you got booked?

Regards, Derek

Hi Derek,

Announcements will be made shortly but don't count out astronauts and others who have not previously been willing to participate in such venues. We are hopeful for some new surprises. I think this is attributable to the reputation organizations like ours and Autographica have achieved after years of doing these shows and by our continuing to leave participating celebrities with impressions of them being a part of something very special.

This in turn generates a momentum that helps attract new celebrities who might not have been interested under other circumstances. Still I say, don't take these shows for granted and attend each as if it might be the last. The opportunities to meet our guests in person are truly priceless as anyone attending a live event such as this will attest. I highly recommend that you either join us, or our great friends Gary and Dave at Autographica.

When at Burbank, Rusty stated that he will probably do one show a year, primarily as a way of dealing with the many autograph requests he still receives. He could always change his mind, of course.

I shall add my wish to that of Mike, that you invite Andrew Chaikin. His book, "A Man on the Moon" is, in my opinion, the definitive account of the Apollo program (you can get it in a three-volume, illustrated edition).

I had the good fortune to meet him at a book-signing, for his book "Space" at the Space Store in Webster, Texas, a few months ago. He was as friendly and accommodating as you could ask for, a true gentleman.

Richard
