Saturday's a double-edged sword. (I can't pretend I've closed myself in my office because I'm working.) |

Uploading of the the Lunar Legacies Space Memorabilia auction to Live Auctioneers was just completed — all 505 lots — and it is ready for viewing and pre-bidding. No Reserves! There are a few descriptions left for me to write, and those will be completed in a couple days, but the bidding numbers are correct and you may pre-bid now if you so choose. I do accept mail-in bids if you cannot be there live for the auction, so please email with your list, and we will be glad to bid for you. Please also understand that all mail bids must be confirmed received by me. Highlights in this auction include: - Items from the collection of Shuttle Launch Director Michael Leinbach
- Apollo 1 crew-signed photo
- Flown Apollo 8 Silver Snoopy award
- Early space shuttle model
- Many crew-signed Apollo and shuttle photos
- Many numbered NASA photo lots
- Many items flown in space
- and much more...
I will be sending out updates as the auction nears, but please email me with any questions you may have. Thanks! — Don Willis |

This is just for some additional auction information and for some quick notes on the bidding process Saturday morning, to eliminate any bidder surprises. The auction will start, in real-time, at promptly 9:00 a.m. Pacific time on Saturday morning, August 16, 2014 at Live Auctioneers. Very important - well beforehand, please go to liveauctioneers.com and select any currently running auction to test your connection — you may have to do an update to get in (I had to). There should be 10-15 auctions running at any particular time, and try to get to the point where you see the live auction unfolding. All mail bids must be in to me by Friday midnight for inclusion into my bid list. Please email them to me at lunarlegacies@gmail.com. There are NO reserves in the auction. That means if there is a bid on an item, it will be sold. Internet bids will come up on your screens as "Live Auctioneer Bid" or something similar. All mail-in bids, phone bids and floor bids entered by us manually will come up as "Competing Bids". I have no access to anyone's low bid or high bid amounts, so I cannot provide anyone with advance information on what a particular lot will start at, or what you will need to bid to win it. We will all see that together once the lot comes up live. Once a lot is sold, I cannot go back to it to reopen the bidding, as I am told by Live Auctioneers. However, if a lot does NOT sell, I can go back to it if you write me a live message on the screen, and if it's not too far in the past. If there is a tie, mail bids will take priority over live internet bids, since they were entered usually days before. Thanks, and we hope to see everyone there - it's going to be fun! — Don Willis |

And do internet bids placed prior to the opening of the auction trump mail-in bids? Seems they should at least be the same priority (since they're both advance bids). Perhaps in that case, the earliest bid wins? |

To answer those two questions, I don't know for sure when the auction will end. Depending on the section, we go about 60 to 80 lots per hour, so with 511 lots, it should be about 7.5 hours after start time, which is about 4:30 p.m. PST.As for the trumped bids, I have no idea and no access to the times when the internet pre-bids are made, or even how much they are, who made them, or anything at all about them. I am totally in the dark, and cannot tell anyone what a lot will open at — we will see together. This is not like eBay, where you can see the current level of the bidding, but only shows the start price during the pre-bidding process, no matter how many people bid on that item. Live Auctioneers tells me it's to guard against bid manipulation. However, when the lot opens on auction day in real time, Live Auctioneers calculates from the pre-bids what the current level is and the new asking price. From there I bid for the mail bidders up to their max if necessary. Since I have no idea if the internet bid was live or a pre-bid amount, I must assume it was made live, so the mail bid trumps the internet bid. This only happens a couple times an auction though - the internet bids and the mail bids have to both stop at precisely the right price, and additionally, the mail bids have to be out of phase with the bidding as a whole (meaning that if the max mail bid is $100, and the bidding is going 20, 30, 40, etc, and I get caught bidding the odd numbers for the mail, I must either skip the 90 bid, or bid the 90 and replace the internet bid of 100 with the mail bid of 100). Does any of this make sense the way I explained it? Hope this helps. |

Excellent! I won the item I wanted. Now to figure out how to pay. You would think that clicking on the shopping cart symbol would take you to the shopping cart, but apparently not... |

How can a lot be sold with nil bids, or am I missing something here? |

As far as I could tell, I entered the winning bid on two different items yet this morning the website still says that I lost the items. Has anyone else had this issue? |

I picked up five items and had no issues. During the bidding there was a green bar at the bottom, under the photo stating I was the top bid (if outbid, it went red) and then once won it was stated so on the right side scrolling bid which also called out the item was closing in three steps before the actual close. As soon as I won an item I was sent an e-mail stating such (about a five minute lag). I was late getting to the online auction due to a Saturday morning home repair item. However, I had done an absentee bid for one of the early items and when I logged in and checked e-mails I had this "You won item Heao Satellite Model" from Live Auctioneers. For me it was nothing but A+ on the auction and the online bidding. Thanks Donnis! |

Hello everyone, and thanks for participating! To answer the numerous questions here... The Live Auctioneers shopping cart will not work because no postage has been figured. There were 107 different winners, so I must make 107 different piles from 511 items scattered about, and then figure 107 different postages. This morning though, is to reconcile the auction - enter all winning bids and winners, only after assigning 107 different bidder numbers into my auction software so it knows who won what. Then enter the 107 different postage amounts, create 107 PDF files, and send out 107 different emails. As you can see, this takes time and it may be Monday or Tuesday until you are emailed an invoice. As for your post Dwight, please email me at lunarlegacies@gmail.com and I will answer you to the fullest about whatever problem you experienced. I can't get to the 100 emails until probably tomorrow however, too much to do in the meantime, so please forgive me in advance for the delay. Also, a lot cannot be sold unless there is a bid. Which lot are you referring to? If there are no bids, I simply hit the "Unsold" button on my screen. Delays in some computer connections may not have shown the whole process for that lot — I don't know. And akinnaird, please let me know which lots are at issue, and I will check the bidding history. Hope all this helps and thanks again. — Don |

It is possible that you entered a bid which already had an absentee bid on it. The older bid took precedence. Early in the auction I was having the same experience. I would hit bid now and see the amount pop up. I thought I had won a couple of items only to realize that the bid was not mine. It had to show in the bidding screen that you had the high bid. I finally figured it out but lost several items I thought I had won. |

Don, I stayed on for about 30% of the sale and had no issues with the site at all. Enjoyed it, and look forward to seeing the items that I won. Nicely done, congrats! |

Donnis, thank you for getting back to me via email. My situation resembles akinnaird's. Ces la vie. That is a Live Auctioneers fault, though. They should have a far clearer bidding display in place. It is fine if you don't have a lot of bidding on an item, but suffers greatly once a bidding war starts. I too was certain I had won an item. |

A friend was bidding on Vintage NASA Skylab 2 Film (A 12" diameter NASA film labeled "Skylab 2 Day 153, Crew Eating and Earth" and complete in its metal canister.) Item ZK1005. He is a researcher and has written a couple of books on live TV from space. He lost the bid but would like to contact the winner (who is in Australia as I am). He would like to know if the winner is on a kine collection project. |
