A rare American flag, which flew on the historic Apollo 11 first moon landing, was sold by Nate D. Sanders auctions yesterday evening for $63,195, which includes the buyer's premium. It was the second highest total ever paid for a space-flown flag.
Auction owner Nate Sanders said, "Collectors want to feel connected with the historic Apollo 11 mission. They fondly remember watching Neil Armstrong take 'One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.'"
The flag is mounted to an official NASA certificate reading: "This flag traveled to the Moon with Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing, July 20, 1969" and is signed by Apollo 11 astronauts, Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin.
