Lunar Legacies has announced its next auction will be on March 28, 2015.
Auction lots (for preview purposes only) are now beginning to appear on the Lunar Legacies website.

The deadline for consignments will be the middle of March at the latest.

This auction will feature a wide variety of items, from all programs including great items from the personal collections of Jack Lousma and Walt Cunningham, and more great things from Michael Leinbach, the last Shuttle Launch Director.

This Lunar Legacies auction will be held at Invaluable (not Live Auctioneers). Live bidding will start at 9 a.m. PST (1600 GMT) on Saturday, March 28, 2015.
This is not a timed auction, but will start at lot no. 1 and go one at a time until finished.

The lots can now be previewed at Lunar Legacies, and all those lots plus a few more will be uploaded to Invaluable no later than 10 days before the auction for pre-bidding.

This auction will feature a wide variety of items as usual from all programs including great items from the personal collections of Jack Lousma and Walt Cunningham.

This may be a dumb question but I'll ask anyway. Is the pre-bidding setting the starting bid price for the live auction? (Is there a live auction?) And is this online only? For once I have some funds to participate and would really like to avoid missing the whole thing. Thanks.

There is a live auction, details below (as for the details of pre-bidding that might be a better question to email directly to Lunar Legacies.

Lunar Legacies notes that their auction catalog is now live on Invaluable.com.
The auction will start live with lot no. 1 starting exactly at 9 a.m. Pacific Time on Saturday, March 28, 2015.

There are some descriptions left to write and all will be completed by Friday (March 20), but the bidding numbers are correct and you may pre-bid now if you so choose once you are registered.

Mail-in bids are accepted so if you cannot be there live for the auction, please email with your list. Please also understand that all mail bids must be confirmed received before they are valid.

Highlights in this auction include:
  • Items from the Jack Lousma collection
  • Items from the Walt Cunningham collection
  • A couple of more items from the Michael Leinbach collection (Shuttle Launch Director)
  • A Lunar Module Engine Thrust Control instrument used in the training of all the moonwalkers

And, a few items from Paul Weitz's personal collection, and one from Bill Pogue's.

Yes, it will indeed be a live auction as if you were attending one in person and it will start at exactly 9 a.m. Pacific time on March 28.

As for the starting prices, when an auction lot comes up, the starting price will be the original posted starting price if there have been no pre-bids. If there have been pre-bids, the auction software will calculate the new starting price accordingly. I have no access to any maximum bid amounts, or as to who has bid on what. It is all handled automatically by Invaluable up until auction starting time. I will be as surprised as you are when a lot opens and the starting price appears.

The auction is online at Invaluable.

The 16th Lunar Legacies Space Memorabilia auction is fast approaching and is scheduled to start on Saturday, March 28 promptly at 9:00 a.m. U.S. Pacific Time, which is 12 noon EST, 5:00 p.m. UK time, 6:00 p.m. for most of Western Europe time and pretty early in the morning Australian time. To view the auction now, go to invaluable.com, scroll down to the "All Houses" pull-down menu and select Lunar Legacies.

Pre-bidding is now open, but you can bid live real-time, one lot at a time, on Saturday.

Mail-in Bids: If you cannot be at the auction and wish me to bid for you, I must have all mail-in bids to me by Friday night. Please also make sure I confirm their receipt or they will not be valid.

Invaluable/Auction Zip will make the auction live to the public about 15-20 minutes before the auction start time, and at that time you should be able to see the first lot up on your screen and be all set to go.

Very important. Beforehand, please go to invaluable.com and select any currently running auction to test your connection — you may have to do an update to get in. There should be 10 to 15 auctions running at any particular time.

After the auction, it will take me a couple days to generate all the final invoices and to email them out, so I please ask for your patience with that. I must make over 100 piles of lots and figure up over 100 postage amounts.

We hope to see you there and good luck! — Don and Jan Willis

I haven't had a chance to look over this auction until now, but I notice some of the Grissom signatures in this auction are somewhat worrisome:

Lot 60 is a highly atypical signature all around. I see little in common here with Grissom's authentic signature style. In my opinion, this is either a straight-up forgery or a "secretarial" signature sent in lieu of an authentic signature.

Lot 62 is very hard to make out in the low resolution scan, but I see some concerns here, particular in the first name. It could be real, but it's really hard to tell with the scan provided.

Lot 93 has unusual letter formation, particularly in the last name. Also, the inscription doesn't strike me as being very similar to Grissom's hand writing.

If these lots sell, I highly recommend getting second opinions on them before completing the transactions. One is always better off being safe than sorry in these matters.

The eBay live auction function stopped working around the time of the shuttle items. Tried other browsers to no avail but think it was eBay and missed out on a few items. Should have registered earlier on Invaluable so I could switch over. Lesson learned.

The one thing that struck me as odd was the same bidder bidding himself up.

I can't remember the particular lots, but I do know that one bidder bid himself up about 6 or 7 times with no one else bidding, costing himself $200 or more each time. Later in the auction, another bidder was doing the same thing. Any idea what that might have been. It couldn't have been a floor bid because those were listed separately.

I also remember being shocked by the Apollo 1 firing room pass. $2,000 seemed a lot for that pass, then again, it was Apollo 1.

Basically, it was good for me to sit through the entire 10 hour ordeal. I got to see what things are going for. A lot of the shuttle crew photos surprised me, like why the later ones (120 and up) are so much more than the first 100.

In the end, the auction was good for me. I missed out on a few, got a few things I wanted, and one that I wish someone would have outbid me on. I still don't know how much I spent. I'm afraid to look, but I'm thrilled with what I got.

I'm just glad it's over so I can finally eat something.

I'm happy with the results, although I too was surprised at the price on the Apollo 1 firing room pass. Picked up a few items I wanted, and one that was a target of opportunity.

I think what you're seeing when a bidder appears to big against themselves is just them bidding against a standing high bid that's been placed before the auction started.

I'm sure that must be the case. But if so, why not show the other bids as well? It's just a weird way to do it, that's all.

I had to sit this one out completely. Can someone tell me the hammer price on lots 540 and 543? Curious as I own some tiles myself.

  • 540: $1500
  • 543: $800
Quite high if you ask me, but they were early Challenger tiles so I think that adds to the appeal.

I had max bids in on six items and even though no other paddle number appeared, the bids on two items were increased without any action on my part and it was my paddle number that was shown as having made the incremental bids. It was very confusing and I think a glitch because it only happened on two of my items.

I am still happy with the results as the items came in under my max bid. I completed the Apollo 17 initialed patch set and I was finally able to get a Skylab Wives patch after being skunked in auctions the three previous times one was offered.

Donnis always has great items and I look forward to his next auction.

I watched about a third of the auction live and noticed this happening often, it would have been nice to see what paddle number was bidding against you. This happened to me on at least one item I bid on, which I'm happy I won, but thought went quite high.

Picked up one item, bid on some others, but they went beyond the range I was willing to pay. Good auction.

I had my eyes on that patch too. The only reason I didn't bid on it was because I'd already won two items I wasn't expecting to win and I had several more items I was waiting on. Now that I know who has it, I'm more than happy I didn't bid you up.

In the end, I won 20 items total, two of which I couldn't live without. The one piece I wish I'd won was lot 696, the STS-119 crew photo signed in gold. Whoever got that one ended up with a very nice addition to their collection. It's one of the most beautiful signed shuttle crew photos I've ever seen.
