The Heritage Nov. 1, 2013 space auction is now open for on-line bidding.

There are some truly great items directly from the astronauts. Good Luck!

Heritage Galleries release
Apollo 11 Flown Crew-Signed Commemorative Cover could bring $40,000+ at Heritage Auctions

Apollo 11 flown American flag could bring $25,000+, Apollo 13 flown Bible text fragment – one of 32 that exists - may sell for $8,000+ Nov. 1 Space Exploration auction in Dallas

An Apollo 11 flown Commemorative Cover, signed by the crew directly from the collection of Mission Command Module Pilot Michael Collins, could sell for $40,000+ leads a stellar line up of space-flown objects and important private collections in Heritage Auctions' Nov. 1 Space Exploration Signature® Auction in Dallas.

One of the more unusual items saw more time in space than any other item in the auction, said Michael Riley, Chief Cataloger for Space at Heritage Auctions. A 50-page section of a microform copy of The Bible, flown around the moon on the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission only later to be carried to the moon's surface during Apollo 14's mission, is expected to bring $8,000+. The evocative fragment – one of just 32 astronaut flight certified examples that exists - is also unique in that its pages include Genesis 1:16, the verse in which the moon is created.

"The fact that it was on not one but two flown lunar missions – especially Apollo 13 and then to the surface – makes it rare," Riley said. "That it includes the only verse which describes the creation of the Moon makes it a true treasure."

Additional items flown on lunar missions include an American flag that accompanied Apollo 11 to the surface of the moon and later signed on a presentation certificate by Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin, could sell for $25,000+, and an Apollo 16 Robbins Medallion, one of only 98 flown and directly from the collection of Mission Commander John Young, is expected to bring $10,000+. A rare Apollo 16 Module lunar orbit chart, as flown to the moon's surface, is expected to fetch $8,000+.

Another one-of-a-kind piece of Space Race memorabilia includes a hand-written note on an Apollo 11 notecard by Neil Armstrong sent to a 9-year-old girl in 1969. In it Armstrong thanks her for a letter and answers a pressing question by explaining that "the Moon is quite a nice place to visit." The letter and hand-addressed envelope are made all the more desirable since it was written between Armstrong's return from the moon and his leaving on the "Giant Leap" world tour in late September 1969 and it could sell for $5,000+.

Among the more unusual space memorabilia crossing the block Nov. 1 is a pair of Neil Armstrong's training-used beta cloth boots, which could fetch $10,000+, and a 1918 edition of Jules Verne's classic From the Earth to the Moon – which presents no less than 10 eerily prophetic similarities to the real U.S. Apollo space program – and signed by 11 Apollo Astronauts, is expected to bring $3,500+.

Additional highlights include but are not limited by:

Two important collections: the first from the personal belongings of longtime NASA photojournalist Andrew "Pat" Patnesky, led by a signed photograph of Mercury Seven Astronauts, which is expected to bring $5,000+; and personal items of Gemini Program Office special assistant Paul M. Sturtevant, which includes a lithograph of a "Mercury Spacecraft" signed by seven astronauts, and expected to sell for $12,000+.

A one dollar bill signed by Astronaut John Glenn after it was flown on Mercury-Atlas 6 (Friendship 7), is expected to bring $8,000+.

A group of 11 mustard seeds flown on Gemini 4 and a personal photo album filled with 36 original NASA glossy photos from the collection of Ed White II, could bring $6,000+.

Numerous models, including a Saturn IB Marshall Space Flight Center launch vehicle on base, from the 1960s, could fetch $3,000+.

Heritage Auctions is the largest auction house founded in the United States and the world's third largest, with annual sales of more than $800+ million, and 800,000+ online bidder members. Good luck to all bidders who are participating in the Heritage Space sale tomorrow. There are truly some great finds, many still directly from the astronauts, which is getting to be more and more difficult.

Remember that great quote -

"My only regrets are for the things I didn't buy."

I remember another quote:

"Holy cow! Buyer's Premium is 25% now?"

I realize this is America and everyone is entitled to make a profit, but to jump from 19.5% to 25% seems a little egregious to me.

Greedy - I hope it will compel consignors to go elsewhere when they realize that bidders, who are mindful of the high commissions, will decrease their maximum bids accordingly (which translates into less money in the consignors pocket).

Going to 25% commission may or may not be "egregious"; it's simply a business risk that may or may not pay off. Many bidders may not realize what they're actually paying for items until invoices arrive, and the reactions and participation rates of bidders and consignors going forward will determine if the hike in that rate is worthwhile maintaining. We probably won't know until an auction or two after the one tomorrow.

Heritage's bidding system shows the total with buyer's premium in the bidding window, so it shouldn't be a surprise later on what the cost will be. Indeed, Heritage has one of the most transparent bidding systems, showing you the true price you're bidding.

Starting prices on most items are what I've seen similar sell for in the past. Will be interesting to see how this goes.

I don't think this will deter anyone from bidding, I do however think that it will deter people from bidding as high as in previous auctions. Nobody wants to pay over the odds, but having seen LOT 40023 I could be wrong.

Lot 40023 sold for $6250. Wow.

$2625 for a signed 16x20 Aldrin visor photo.

$1875 for a signed 8x10 photo of Cernan saluting the flag on the lunar surface.

Some of the lots sold for crazy prices. That said, I got what I wanted and at a lower cost than the market average. Very pleased!

I'm looking forward to the other auctions now!

I am pleased as well, a GT-3 signed cover and a Gemini VII Fliteline Medallion for half of what I was willing to pay.

I can't believe nobody competed with me on the Mercury Big Joe swatch (LOT 40004). I was eyeing that up since the catalogue went live!

Does anyone have any info on the Ed White Mustard Seeds? They sold for a pretty penny. I remember an auction quite a while ago where one was for sale, but I never heard the story.

Well, the 25% premium didn't seem the dissuade anyone. I was blown out of the bidding on the two items I targeted. Went slightly above my max (which was above the items' past comparable values) and was trumped by someone who had their bids in before the live auction. (Which was also odd considering I was winning the lots when they cut off Internet bidding last night, but was greeted with a text at 8am this morning telling me I was outbid.)

But all in all, "more money than brains" seemed to rule the general tide of the auction. It was definitely a good day for consignors.

There have been a lot of EW II mustard seeds floating around at auctions over the last 5 years. Just wait and some will show up. I never bid on them, but from what I can remember you can get them for relatively low cost.

Thanks for the info SkyMan. When you say lowcost, how much is that roughly? It would be nice to have one with a framed picture I think.

Take a look at the Heritage archives. They most likely will have several sales over the last X years.

$35,000 for lot 40198 Armstrong EKG? sheesh.

I was very pleased to get the Apollo 13 crew signed beta cloth inscribed to me (!) for $625.

The guy who won the Society of Experimental Test Pilots signed program (signed by Armstrong + 7 others) on Nov 1 has already listed in on eBay for 2x what the lot sold for. Check it out (ebay auction# 151157575586). Pretty lame, if you ask me...

I'd also like to congratulate Heritage on the quality of their live-auction software. For the first time I was able to watch live on an iPad even over a dodgy wi-fi connection!

I agree that Heritage has the most user-friendly, transparent and best working system in the business - the 25% are tough, of course, but it's always shown during bidding, so you always know what the final price is.

Doesn't make it cheaper though, but it's really great tool.

I just realized they are taking PayPal now which makes it much easier for oversea bidders to pay. Particularly if you have a PayPal account in USD. I now save the money from withdrawing and sending Heritage it back converted into USD as wire.

That said, this procedure saves me about 5-6% in conversion costs ALONE making it up for the 25% buyers commission!

Actually, the same seller seems to be offering a good number of signed items from the just concluded auction, with an eBay inventory that suggests this individual is an autograph dealer, not a collector (though he/she may be a collector as well), and not just space.

It bears keeping in mind not everyone bidding in an auction is doing so for strictly collecting purposes, and also that this individual was willing to pay more for the items than anyone else.

(Interestingly, this seller is also offering a baseball signed by Pete Rose, who added the inscription "First Man On The Moon." Not sure why Rose would add that — perhaps a reference to how far he feels he's been banished from baseball — but there it is).

There is an interesting mini-documentary on Pete Rose that follows him through his daily routine. Apparently, his life has become a never-ending signing. Most days he sits in a Las Vegas gallery waiting for people to come in so he can hawk an autograph. He is constantly doing private signings, shows, etc.

Plain old signed balls are as common as dirt, so having Pete Rose add bizarre inscriptions seems to be a new cottage industry. I have seen stuff like "Sorry I broke up the Beatles," "I didn't kill Kennedy," "Sorry I screwed up the economy," "I was born the day Lincoln was shot," etc.

Many of the messages have a martyr-like tone to them... like he has been falsely accused of all kinds of terrible things. I suppose there is some subtext to those type of messages — at least in Pete Rose's mind.

Try and contact directly via phone one of Heritage's three "space exploration specialists." You'll find them listed/pictured near the front cover of the auction catalogue. They've always been helpful when I've contacted them. Good luck!
