The next Goldberg space memorabilia auction is on Saturday April 6, 2013. The auction is now online. Some highlights are:
  • an early USN Mark IV pressure suit and helmet, which is outstanding
  • the largest section of Mercury aft heat shield we have seen is featured in lot 234 (flown on "Faith 7")
  • there are two letters from Neil Armstrong written to a former co-worker with interesting content
  • several items from Michael Orenstein are listed including his "library."
  • a very unique aviation item is the co-pilots commemorative ring from the first around the world flight in 1924. The Smithsonian has the pilot's ring in their collection.
  • Deke Slayton's key to the city of San Francisco is sure to open a few doors.
Take a look.

The Apollo 11 lunar surface landed flag sold for $20K. This seems somewhat under other lunar surface Apollo 11 items?!?

It's a function of a couple of things - but I would say, mainly, it is the provenance. Second hand, not direct from an astronaut; flag itself is not flight certified on the flag; no reference to who the consignor is...in all honesty, I'm surprised it went as high as it did.

It's an issue which will impact most of these flags (and other ephemera) hence they are not the best long term investment. Since the flags themselves lack unique organic attributes which definitively tie them to flight history, over time confidence in provenance will continue to erode, giving subsequent potential buyers further pause before taking the plunge.

Exception may be the originally mounted flags provided their origin is fully understood but even these are relatively easy to counterfeit.

All times are CT (US)
