Just a quick email to remind everyone that it is never too early to think about consigning your excess memorabilia to the Fall sale. I will be leaving June 6th for Dallas, June 7th for Houston (where I will be holding an Appraisal Clinic at the Hilton Clear Lake on June 8th, Florida on the 9th-18th, Huntsville on the 19th and Nashville on the 20th. If anyone would like to meet to talk about memorabilia in general, or a consignment in particular, I look forward to hearing from you. The schedule is rather tight as it stands now, but am always glad to talk to/meet old and new friends.

Hi Michael,

Are you holding appraisal clinics in Huntsville and Nashville, or just have other reasons to be there? If yes, I'd love to try to attend one. I don't have anything I want to consign, but I need to get an appraisal for insurance purposes.

Regards,
Geoff

No. Unfortunately, there won't be enough time. You are welcome to call me when I am in FL (6/9-6/17, ph 305-940-3724) and we can see if we can connect at one of the hotels - though it is a bit of a long shot. Anyway, the only Appraisal Clinic will be in Houston at the Hilton, Clear Lake by JSC.

If we cannot connect, perhaps we can do something via email after I get back on the 20th.

I received the catalog yesterday. It is well-illustrated and has some great items. I wish I could afford to bid on the Apollo 1 crew-signed photo. There are a lot of flown patches and flags, as well.

I like getting the catalog more than 2 weeks before the auction-- it gives time to do some studying and strategizing.

I believe lot 146, Apollo 16 Charlie Duke family photo, may be misinterpreting the meaning of Duke's inscription. Maybe this has already been cleared up in some past discussion. But I just had a look at this lot and I wonder if there's a misunderstanding.

Duke's inscription thanks the photographer for taking the family picture. The first photo is a print of the family's picture. The second photo shows the family picture on the lunar surface. Duke says, "This one flew to the moon aboard Apollo 16."

The lot description takes this to mean that the photo print presented in the lot IS the photo print shown on the lunar surface. My understanding is that Duke left the family photo print on the lunar surface. Duke's inscription may mean he took the extra photo print with him on Apollo 16, and perhaps only to lunar orbit. Or it could mean that "this one," as in, the one print shown in the photo at right, went to the moon.

At any rate, I'm confused. If necessary I hope Charlie Duke can clarify this.

I had the opportunity to peronally ask Charlie Duke about this lot (lot 146 in Friday's Goldberg auction) at the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation's Autograph Show this past Friday. He remembered Ludy, and this photo, and verbally confirmed to me that yes, this was the photo he took to the lunar surface, carried it back to earth and presented it to Ludy Benjamin, the photographer who originally made the family photo. Hope that this helps clear up the confusion.

On the Lunar Surface Journal there's an image of the photo on the surface.

The photo is very warped, which could be corrected by mounting, but also looks creased at the bottom. I would expect some trace of the creasing at least to be visible on the photo in this presentation (when viewed in person). Can you confirm if this is the case?

Well, I now must admit to an inadvertent misinterpretation of my description for lot 146. I had the actual photo examined this morning and there are no signs of a tear or wrinkles on the photo. Based on the photo referenced in the previous comments, there should be if this is the actual photo from the moon. My mistake was in making the assumption that we were dealing with only one photo and not with multiple images. When I showed the lot to Charlie Duke on the catalog page, his comment was that "yes, I remember that photo and Ludy. Yes, the photo WAS on the lunar surface - or words to that effect". Had I had any inkling that we were dealing with multiple images, I might have probed further. I just took his statement at face value, that the photo flew, therefor it was as pictured, the one on the lunar surface. Please accept my apologies. I will announce the change on the floor and most it to the internet correction list.

PS. Anything else I need be concerned about?

I recall Duke once saying that the photo he placed on the lunar surface developed those wrinkles very quickly and started to turn black shortly after he snapped a photo of it laying on the surface. Besides, it would appear that the photo placed on the lunar surface was meant to stay there and not be returned...much like other objects that other astronauts brought with them to the moon.

I won Item 144 Apollo 15, Lunar Module Range/Rate Indicator Gauge for a reasonable $1,250 ($1,500 with commission). Other items ($1,100 for a Flown A-7 Robbins) seem to have sold low with a few exceptions, especially the Moon Rock Containment Vessels.

Why was Item 139: Apollo 14, 1971, Moon Rock Containment Vessel so high at $5,000 ($6,000 with 20% commission) when the pre-auction estimate was $350-$500?

What was your overall impression of this auction?

I thought the prices were pretty low overall. The turnover rate of items was pretty fast though - there were a couple of items I would have bid on but they appeared and closed so fast I simply didn't have time to react.

There were some exceptions to the low prices - e.g. the Al Stevens artwork which fetched an enormous amount in total (bearing in mind the prices they originally fetched on eBay).

Will a list of the prices realized be put on the website? I like to print out the list and put it with the catalog.

I went to the Goldberg web site to look at the catalog for last month's November auction. Although there's a link, it leads to nowhere and the catalog isn't available. Does anyone have any info on this, or perhaps could share a pdf version? Thanks. Dave
