Registration has begun for the Space Walk of Fame's Project Apollo Monument Benefit Silent Auction, presented by The Wonder of it All director Jeffrey Roth in partnership with collectSPACE.

Also debuting today is a preview of just some of the experiences and memorabilia to be offered when bidding opens on August 20. The auction will run through August 30, to end at the benefit dinner and documentary screening at Space Center Houston, Texas. Tickets for that event, which will include Apollo astronauts and an astronaut autograph grab bag, are now on sale, too.

Bidding began today in the Space Walk of Fame's adventures and artifacts auction to benefit the Project Apollo Monument. The 20-lot auction runs online from August 20 to August 30.

Two of the lots may be of special interest to space artifact collectors. Sam Beddingfield, whose NASA ID badge is #4 and who worked as a mechanical engineer throughout the Mercury program has donated two special pieces from his personal collection:

  • An explosive bolt (now inert) removed by Beddingfield from Mercury-Redstone 2 after its sub-orbital launch with Ham the chimp.

  • A hand controller locking pin that was flown on Mercury-Atlas 8 aboard Wally Schirra's Sigma 7. Beddingfield retrieved the pin after the capsule returned to Cape Canaveral.
Both pieces are accompanied by a letter of authenticity signed by Beddingfield.

These two lots, along with 18 others, all began with a $50 opening bid. So register now and good luck bidding!

Of course I am biased, but the evening was a lot of fun. A huge thanks to Jeffrey Roth and Jayme Coplin for organizing a great event, and to all the volunteers who made the night a success!

We're still wrapping up the auction this weekend and will start contacting winners on Tuesday. All 21 online lots and 5 event-only lots sold and there were both in-person and online winners.

As Space Walk of Fame president Charlie Mars put it, the auction alone funded a "pillar and a half" towards the completion of the Project Apollo monument.

The grab bags were a huge hit and sold very quickly! There was a great selection of autographs to be found inside them, as well as t-shirts, laser-etched crystal paperweights, lapel pins, vintage NASA photos and more.

Unfortunately, I missed the tribute to Bob Legler, as well as the screening and the Q&A session afterwards, as I needed to use that time to close the auction. Hopefully, some of the cSers who were there can chime in with their memories from the evening.

All times are CT (US)
