Manions release

NASA auction closing soon
Extensive collection of items from career of former NASA Safety Inspector to close on April, 29th 2007 through Manion’s International Auction House – www.manions.com

By nature, collecting historic items provides a glimpse into the past. However, when collecting artifacts documenting man’s endeavors in outer space, the enterprise provides an indication of the future as well.

Manion’s International is currently offering a collection of historic importance. A former NASA Saftey Inspector amassed the items during his lifelong service with the organization, and features personal items from many different space missions.

“It is a huge collection of items documenting a very exciting time,” said Manion’s representative John Conway. “It’s not only historically important, but technologically as well.”

One highlight of the lot is a group of items belonging to Astronaut Wally Schirra. It includes a framed photo with signature, a set of his Astronaut wings, a USN flight suit nametag featuring wings of the same design, and two of his id badges.

Several autographs of other astronauts are included, as are many of the official awards and documents presented to this former NASA employee – including 8 NASA medals. This collection is an archivists dream, and includes piles of paperwork and photos documenting this man’s WWII Air Corps service as well as his time with NASA.

“We are offering the collection in its entirety for what we feel is an appropriate reserve bid price,” said Conway. “We hate to see the collection broken up, but our instructions from the consignor gives us permission to do so.”

If the collection does not sell, the items will be separated into several lots and again offered through Manion’s International Auction House on their website.

For more information about the collection, visit www.manions.com and click the NASA banner in the center of the page.

I had an opportunity to review several of the lots mentioned in Manions' description.

Other than the inscription on a Skylab rescue crew photo (S-73-33396) and an Apollo 12 crew photo, the other signed photos offered appear to be autopens.

The Apollo 1 patch noted in the lot was made by AB Emblem.

That said, those few items should not detract from what appears to be a desirable collection of Apollo and earlier era memorabilia.

For you patch collectors, there is a signed beta cloth SMEAT and a regular embroidered SMEAT patch in this lot. Also, a SMEAT access badge. I thought for a while about bidding just to get those, but doubt I will now.

I'm confused by the Manion's webpage - this seems to be an auction for one lot only. Is that correct?

Yes, just one large lot.

I am interested in two items in this auction, but haven’t been brave enough to bid. Question: There is a flight suit or flight jacket name tag for Wally Schirra in the lot. It didn’t dawn on me until recently that Schirra was a naval aviator. Would a naval aviator/astronaut ever wear Air Force wings? I’d really be surprised if he did. I know Schirra did do some kind of detail or assignment with the Air Force at some point in his career, but every naval aviator I know would never have worn Air Force pilot wings. Wondering if the collector of this material had these made. YOUR THOUGHTS?

I know I am going to regret telling the World about this... Manion's International Auction House (www.manions.com) has split up the large lot of NASA materials belonging to Robert McLaughlin. McLaughlin was a NASA engineer from, I'm guessing, 1970 until the 1980s. The group did not sell as a lot, so they are now breaking it up.

To check out what they have now, go to their web site and type in "NASA."

Currently, there are some impressive certificates, badges, and medals. SMEAT program ID badge, a Skylab parasol piece, and some shuttle covers. There were some Schirra ID badges that will be on eventually.

I don't own this stuff, but there really are some interesting items in the McLaughlin group. Good luck and please don't tell anyone about it; I'd prefer to be the high bidder at the lowest price. Ben
