By nature, collecting historic items provides a glimpse into the past. However, when collecting artifacts documenting man’s endeavors in outer space, the enterprise provides an indication of the future as well.

Manion’s International is currently offering a collection of historic importance. A former NASA Saftey Inspector amassed the items during his lifelong service with the organization, and features personal items from many different space missions.

“It is a huge collection of items documenting a very exciting time,” said Manion’s representative John Conway. “It’s not only historically important, but technologically as well.”

One highlight of the lot is a group of items belonging to Astronaut Wally Schirra. It includes a framed photo with signature, a set of his Astronaut wings, a USN flight suit nametag featuring wings of the same design, and two of his id badges.

Several autographs of other astronauts are included, as are many of the official awards and documents presented to this former NASA employee – including 8 NASA medals. This collection is an archivists dream, and includes piles of paperwork and photos documenting this man’s WWII Air Corps service as well as his time with NASA.

“We are offering the collection in its entirety for what we feel is an appropriate reserve bid price,” said Conway. “We hate to see the collection broken up, but our instructions from the consignor gives us permission to do so.”

If the collection does not sell, the items will be separated into several lots and again offered through Manion’s International Auction House on their website.

Other than the inscription on a Skylab rescue crew photo (S-73-33396) and an Apollo 12 crew photo, the other signed photos offered appear to be autopens.

The Apollo 1 patch noted in the lot was made by AB Emblem.

Currently, there are some impressive certificates, badges, and medals. SMEAT program ID badge, a Skylab parasol piece, and some shuttle covers. There were some Schirra ID badges that will be on eventually.
