Hello:Swann Galleries has confirmed that Lot 383 and eBay item #130092245826 - 2109383 (A13 crew-signed cover)is an insurance cover. Can anyone on cS confirm or deny this? Thanks for your help. Dan |

I'd be wary of it with a missing original postmark and an add-on 10th anniversary cancel. Just my 2 cents...Dennis Dillman |

Dennis:Thank you for the additional direction. It seemed like a disconnect to not have it listed as an insurance cover but to get an email stating that it is. Having more knowledge on what to look for is very helpful. Dan |

Dan--It may appear, perhaps for original purposes, Swann's auctioned Apollo 13 "astronaut pin" cachet cover was indeed signed by the original crew. You can see at the upper right, near the top-right of the applied postage stamp, that seven machine cancellation lines were just partially "hit" on the cover's edge during the actual launch processing. This may imply that the signed cover was one from the initial "crew" batch, however, we don't know from the description of the lot if the cover was owned by one of the crewmembers or somebody close to them. But, as Dennis remarked, since it wasn't properly posted for the Apr. 1970 launch--and the fact--it was later posted for the mission's tenth anniversary with a second postage stamp affixed at the bottom, it would be best in my opinion not to consider it as an "original-purpose" crew insurance cover since there is no exact-day launch posting. |

Ken:Thank you for the additional detail and for sharing your opinion. There is so much to learn and so little time. It is wonderful to have access to the collective knowledge of the cS community. Dan |

IMO, there should be strict guidelines and requirements for a cover to be deemed an actual and "official" Apollo Insurance cover and IMO this Apollo 13 crew signed, but anniversary-dated cover, doesn't qualify or meet those requirements. It very probably was intended to be an Insurance cover and was very possibly held by one of the family members during the mission, but not having a proper date-of-mission cancel disqualifies it from being an actual and standard Insurance cover IMO. It's a good Apollo 13 (original crew) crew signed cover and is on the same type of envelope used for Apollo 13 Insurance covers, but falls short of qualifying as such - again IMO. Bob Mc. |

Bob--Agreed! If not KSC-launch posted, along with not knowing the cover's ownership, plus the fact it was cancelled for an anniversary with a second stamp...it would not be consider, in my opinion as well, as an original or official crew- insignia insurance cover. Perhaps I didn't explain that in the way that I wanted to from my prior posting here. Thanks for clarifying it. |
