Regency-Superior release

quote:
Regency-Superior's next public auction (#51) is scheduled for Saturday, December 3rd in St. Louis, Missouri. The Space and Aviation section will begin at 10am (CT), and features many autographs, an impressive variety of space memorabilia from various American and Russian missions including many items carried into space and to the moon. In addition, there are 30-different aviation and space models available.

The following highlights are from the 500 space lots being offered. The full auction catalog can be viewed online at: http://www.regencysuperior.com

Additionally, collectors may bid via eBay Live during the auction. Regency-Superior’s auction will be posted on eBay Live ten (10) days prior to the sale.

Lot Number: 337
1950s-60s Mark IV Pressure Suit and Helmet

Our consignor acquired this wonderful suit from an engineer involved in the space program who is now deceased. As the story goes, the suit was worn by or fitted for John Glenn and others as they went through the centrifuge program at the Naval Air Station, Warminster, PA prior to the closing of that base. There is a stenciling on the inside which reads: MK IV mod, fleet instruction, special sizing Large Long. The original face glass had been removed by the Navy Program to prevent possible suffocation while wearing the suit and helmet. The plastic visor is broken, otherwise the suit and helmet are in great shape considering the nearly 50 years since its use. Gold colored helmet with U.S. Navy insignia on top and B.F. Goodrich on back, USN patches on left shoulder and chest. Leather and rubber parts beginning to become brittle, still overall excellent condition. A rare opportunity to acquire an early astronaut training suit. Letter from consignor included with lot.

Lot Number: 423
1969 Flown, Crew signed Beta Cloth Patch

Pristine 6"x6" beta cloth patch that was carried to the Moon during the first lunar landing mission. The piece is in pristine condition, signed at the bottom by Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin. Across the top, in Collins handwriting he wrote: ‘Carried to the Moon aboard Apollo XI July 1969’. Ex The Michael Collins Collection.

Lot Number: 477
1971 High Flight Poem Carried to the Moon

Autographed copy of the poem ‘High Flight’ that was carried to the Moon by astronaut Jim Irwin aboard Apollo 15. Al Worden also signed the copy. This 8_”x11" poem was donated by Jim Irwin to a 1978 auction to raise funds for Don Chaffee the father of Astronaut Roger Chaffee who was so tragically killed in the Apollo 1 fire. A letter from Irwin donating this item to that auction with other supporting documentation, including the original auction catalog is also present. Irwin has noted: ‘This Copy Was Flown to The Moon on Flight of Apollo 15 26 July - 7 Aug 71’ and inscribed: ‘To Mr. Chaffee in Memory of Roger Who Made Our Flight to The Moon Possible--Jim Irwin, Apollo 15. Also included is an 8"x10" black and white photo of a portrait of Roger Chaffee signed in blue ballpoint by artist William Numeroff and by Don Chaffee, Roger’s father. Fresh condition. A true piece of Space history. Ideal for framing and museum display.

Lot Number: 783
1960s Manned Orbiting Laboratory Model

Rare Gemini B MOL composite model 27_”x4" mounted horizontally on a wood base. There is no plaque. Some aging and slight discoloration, but no huge problem. Very seldom do we see models related to this fascinating experimental program, especially one this large. Inspection a must.

Robert:

The inscribed poem and photo of Roger Chaffee were originally auctioned to raise funds for Mr. Donald Chaffee in 1978. Was that the auction of the International Association of Space Philatelists (IASP)? The auction is not specified.

I was president of the IASP when we had an auction for Mr. Chaffee. We had many very rare items in the auction donated by many notable people. We raised funds that were needed by Mr. Chaffee. It was a very interesting auction. Now, even the catalog is a collectors item.

I received my catalog in the mail today-- very nicely illustrated.

It is a pleasure to get the catalog a month before the auction (with Aurora it was 2 days before the event).

There are a lot of covers in this auction which should please the space cover collectors amongst us (myself included).

Thanks to Regency-Superior for sending me the catalog for their Space Memorabilia Auction of 2-3 Dec 2005. As I mentioned previously, the catalog itself is a collector's item. The Space segment of the huge auction begins on page 84 with Lot #322 and ends on page 135 with Lot #840. Every lot is illustrated in full color on 30 full pages of photos.

There are many items that I have never seen previously and some that looked familiar. Included are many autographed shuttle crew photos, autographed space covers, medallions, patches, space toys and models. I do not see any space hardware, but what is in the auction is fascinating. Many of them would make great Christmas gifts for collectors. The lots may be viewed and an auction catalog can be ordered at the following link: http://www.regencystamps.com/public_auction.shtml

Lots #1 - 75 in the non-space section of the auction include items of "Cowboy Memorabilia". The lots are arranged by the specific western TV series. They bring back memories of the '50's and '60's when over 30 westerns were on TV.
