I was looking through the Aurora PDF files again and double-checking against my own images files of known autopens and it seems to me a number of the Apollo crew-signed pictures look an awful-lot like classic autopens. The following all look to me like autopens: AS-7 Lot 265 AS-8 Lot 285 AS-9 Lot 298 AS-10 Lot 312 AS-13 Lot 428 AS-14 Lot 449 Can someone with more experience than me confirm or deny this? |

It's kind of sad for all the autograph collectors. The autographed items that are offered are few and far between and some of the prime ones offered, other than the Apollo 1 signed litho, are mostly autopens. I was looking for a Apollo 13 (Swigert) crew signed litho and wanted to add some signed Shuttle crews (none offered) . Well as us Cub fans say, wait until next year (or Spring). Dave |

The color catalogue on the website has NOT been corrected for the a/p's, so I assume when VJC says "the online catalogue has been corrected" she means the ebay live version - caveat emptor. In addition I would want to see #76 Shepard in person. I made the mistake of buying one of these once and it was a PRINTED signature. The attached letter could, of course be ok, but we don't know that. On the whole though, it's a good effort to get hard copy and online catalogue earlier than in previous years. Paul Bramley |

Agreed, those mentioned are indeed autopens. Another autopen is, believe it or not, #54 with the Mercury 7 signed pic. It contains autopens of Schirra, Cooper, and possibly a secretarial of Shepard. The others appear to be authentic...and please take my word for it as I can help prove the APs on this lot. Lot #76 isn't authentic at all, but the Shepard autograph and inscription is part of the actual print production as these came from Langley in 1961 when Shepard became so popular as America's first spaceman (i.e. I have several of these myself that were issued in two different sizes). Need to recheck #280 on the Lovell as my catalog is fuzzy on that particular lot...but...there appears to be Lovell autopens from #s 279, 281, and 285. Perhaps atypical Scott on #297, but need to see closer. Crew autopens are for the following; #265, 298, 312, 428, 448, 560 (Stafford), and need to recheck #471 as I can't see it too well in my catalog (old age setting in, huh). Let me briefly comment on Lot #306 with the flown Apollo 10 lunar-orbital flag. It contains printed autopen signatures of Stafford and Young, however, the Cernan is genuine and the inscription at the bottom of the flag certificate is in Cernan's hand. This is my first "rough-draft" impression of autopens, etc., but I haven't had enough time to examine the other pages beyond the ASTP section. I do have some concerns and issues about some of the Apollo 11 material being offered in this auction (i.e. Armstrong signatures), but I think it would be best not to remark at this time. As before, I was requested to make some observations from several collectors in this forum that I hope will be useful and helpful (not to criticize) in some way. |
