Following its first fully-crewed spaceflight, Virgin Galactic has set its base ticket price and announced three tiers of reservations for flights beginning in 2022:
Announced plans to reopen sales effective today (Aug. 5). For the private astronaut market, the Company will have three consumer offerings:
  1. a single seat;
  2. a multi‐seat couples / friends / family package; and
  3. full‐flight buy out.
Pricing for these offers will begin at $450,000 per seat. Sales will initially open to the company's significant list of early hand‐raisers, prioritizing the Spacefarer Community, who, as promised, will be given first opportunity to reserve their place in space.

A follow‐on priority list will be opened to customers interested in reserving future spaceflights.

According to the company, its existing Future Astronaut reservations remains at approximately 600, as of June 30, 2021. About 1,000 people put down $1,000 as members of the Spacefarer Community.

Wow... $450,000!

I wonder how many of those who made reservations and down payments will follow through; now that a single seat has been priced $200,000 over the initial projected price of $250,000.

My understanding, and it may be wrong, is that those who signed flight contracts for $200,000 and $250,000 will be able to fly for that amount, just not before those who pay $450,000 or other premium amounts.

$250,000 plunked down in June 2005 was worth just under $350,000 in June 2021 adjusting for inflation via the CPI. Assuming even minimal commitment to the Dow Jones (which has roughly tripled since June 2005), you'd be WAY ahead financially if you had invested some of that $250,000 in 2005 in the Dow Jones, and bought a $450,000 ticket today.

That would be a huge mistake on Virgin Galactic's part. Those customers got in early, believed in commercial spaceflight's potential, and helped finance (in some small part) the project to get to this point. They have been put up as "future astronauts" at every PR event Branson has done for the last 15 years.

Placing them behind new customers with deeper pockets might just turn more than a few of them off.

$450,000 for a few minutes of weightlessness? It reminds me of a set of predictions I wrote down after Apollo 17 in 1972, to be opened on 1st January 2000. One was that by the year 2000 I would be able to buy a return ticket to the Moon but NOT at a price I could afford or at least justify spending.

This is isn't news to those who already hold reservations. In 2019, Virgin Galactic said publicly that the ticket price would be going up and those who paid more would fly first.

That was also around the same time that Virgin Galactic announced the Spacefarer Community program, which, for a $1,000 deposit, would give you first access to the higher priced tickets.

There was no big push back at the time and Virgin Galactic reported yesterday that its reservation count remains at about where it was in 2019.

As part of its third quarter 2021 financial results, Virgin Galactic reported "strong ticket sales at its updated pricing of $450,000 per seat."
In August 2021, opened sales to our Spacefarer community, the group of early hand-raisers who had reserved the right to be first in line for tickets. The Company announced a target of 1,000 reservations prior to the launch of private astronaut commercial service. Approximately 700 of these 1,000 have been sold to date. Current pricing of $450,000 per seat has been well received.

Virgin Galactic release
Virgin Galactic Opens Limited Opportunity to Purchase Future Spaceflight Reservation

Virgin Galactic, an aerospace and space travel company, announced today (Feb. 15) that ticket sales will open to the general public starting on February 16, providing the opportunity to purchase one of the initial spaceflight reservations and secure membership in the unique community of Future Astronauts.

"At Virgin Galactic, we believe that space is transformational," said Virgin Galactic CEO Michael Colglazier. "We plan to have our first 1,000 customers on board at the start of commercial service later this year, providing an incredibly strong foundation as we begin regular operations and scale our fleet."

Virgin Galactic spaceflight reservations also provide access to the Future Astronaut membership community -- designed and curated to bring inspiration, excitement, and adventure from the time of ticket purchase to spaceflight and beyond. Members will enjoy access to money-can't-buy experiences, events, trips and space-readiness activities while they await their spaceflight.

The spaceflight itself launches from Spaceport America in New Mexico. Starting with several days of spaceflight preparedness activities, future astronauts will stay with their guests at forthcoming custom accommodations. Guests will enjoy bespoke itineraries and world-class amenities during astronaut-specific training programs.

During spaceflight, astronauts will experience a 90-minute journey including a signature air launch and Mach-3 boost to space. The spaceship gracefully flips while astronauts enjoy several minutes of out-of-seat weightlessness and breath-taking views of Earth from the spaceship's 17 windows. Upon return from this transformational experience, astronauts will begin a meaningful journey to create positive impact with the perspective that can only come from seeing our beautiful planet from space.

Spaceflight reservations are a total price of USD $450,000. Following an initial deposit of USD $150,000, customers will make their final payment before their flight. Those interested in spaceflight reservations can visit virgingalactic.com to start the application process.
