Virgin Galactic today (Nov. 8) issued a press release (reprinted below) regarding the media coverage for its first commercial passenger flight. As part of the announcement, Peacock Productions offered the first details as to the schedule for the flight. If all the flight tests proceed according to plan, that inaugural passenger spaceflight could take off from New Mexico's Spaceport America during a special edition of NBC's TODAY show next August, said Sharon Scott, president and general manager of Peacock Productions."They are hoping for August, but it's completely engineering-driven," Scott told NBC News in advance of Friday's announcement on TODAY. "There's no guarantee for that. August is the desire." ...so far, SpaceShipTwo has been flown through more than two dozen glide flights — plus two rocket-powered test outings, in April and September. Another powered test is expected within a month. SpaceShipTwo's test pilots plan to start crossing the 100-kilometer-high (62-mile-high) boundary of outer space "by early next year," Branson said on TODAY. |

Are these grown children? Or will they be the youngest space flyers ever? |

Adult children; Holly is 31, Sam is 28. (And they won't be the youngest: Gherman Titov was a month shy of 26 when he flew in 1961.)They will, however, be the first blood relatives to fly in space together (along with their father). |

Now I'm curious. Why did you qualify the statement with "blood relatives"? Have in-laws or adoptive relatives flown in space together already? |

Yes, they were; Scott Kelly was commander of Expedition 26 and Mark Kelly was commander of STS-134, but the final flight of space shuttle Endeavour was delayed beyond Scott Kelly's stay at the space station. | |
