United Nations release
United Nations and Sierra Nevada Corporation Sign Agreement to Collaborate on a Dedicated Dream Chaser Space Mission for Member States

The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and the Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together to provide affordable opportunities for United Nations Member States to conduct experiments in space.

Under the agreement, UNOOSA and SNC will work with United Nations Member States to define a multi-country mission opportunity that will provide Member States, and especially non-space-faring ones, affordable access to space to develop and fly payloads for missions related to experiments in microgravity science, remote sensing, or space hardware qualification.

The SNC is the developer of the Dream Chaser, a reusable, orbital spacecraft designed to be a flexible Space Utility Vehicle and transportation system for a variety of Low-Earth orbit (LEO) missions.

One of the main goals of UNOOSA is to promote economic and social development through space activities. "At UNOOSA we are committed to helping all countries benefit from space technologies and capabilities. I am pleased that SNC has partnered with us to provide such tangible opportunities in pursuit of this goal," said Simonetta Di Pippo, Director of UNOOSA.

"SNC is honoured to partner with UNOOSA under our Dream Chaser Global Initiative to offer access to space to a wide range of countries, from those with well-defined space programmes and objectives to developing countries who would like the social and economic benefits of a space programme without the time and financial burden of developing the necessary infrastructure," said Mark N. Sirangelo, SNC corporate vice president for Space Systems.

He added: "Our vision, in partnership with the UN, is to provide UN Member States with affordable access to space and a range of multi-mission opportunities using the Dream Chaser spacecraft to host a wide range of payloads. Countries will be able to customize their participation level commensurate with the maturity of their space capabilities and national desires, while engaging their universities, industrial companies and government laboratories, and most importantly, their people. We offer a complete solution for participations, providing not only the spacecraft, but all aspects of flight including mission planning and operations."

UNOOSA is in a unique position to help connect SNC with UN Member States to enable a multi-country mission opportunity while highlighting the peaceful use and access to space for all nations. The MOU provides the framework for cooperation and understanding, and to facilitate collaboration between the Parties to further their shared goal of providing more countries the opportunity to realize the economic and educational benefits of participating in the space economy.

"The space arena is growing increasingly diverse as private industry actors become more involved in space technologies and exploration. It's great to see a company like SNC bring their expertise to UNOOSA's holistic approach to capacity building and our goal of bringing the benefits of space to all," said Ms Di Pippo.

Sierra Nevada Corporation release
Sierra Nevada Corporation and the United Nations Announce First-Ever Dedicated United Nations Dream Chaser Space Mission

Launching a Dedicated Dream Chaser Microgravity Mission for Member States in 2021

Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) and the United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and have announced details of the first-ever United Nations space mission at the International Astronautical Congress today in Guadalajara, Mexico. The dedicated Dream Chaser mission is targeted at providing developing countries the opportunity to develop and fly microgravity payloads for an extended duration in orbit; however, all United Nations Member States will be able to propose payloads for the mission.

Innovating for Positive Impact

"At SNC our goal is to pay it forward," said Eren Ozmen, SNC's owner and president. "That means leveraging the creation and success of our Dream Chaser spacecraft to benefit future generations of innovators like us all around the world."

This announcement builds on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in June 2016 between UNOOSA and SNC to collaborate on this historic United Nations space mission. The first-ever United Nations space mission is intended to launch in 2021 and will allow United Nations Member States to participate in a 14-day flight to low-Earth orbit (LEO) on SNC's Dream Chaser spacecraft.

"One of UNOOSA's core responsibilities is to promote international cooperation in the peaceful use of outer space," said Simonetta Di Pippo, director of UNOOSA. "I am proud to say that one of the ways UNOOSA will achieve this, in cooperation with our partner SNC, is by dedicating an entire microgravity mission to United Nations Member States, many of which do not have the infrastructure or financial backing to have a standalone space program."

Making Space Affordable

According to Ms. Di Pippo, funding of the mission will come from multiple sources. "We will continue to work closely with SNC to define the parameters of this mission which, in turn, will provide United Nations Member States with the ability to access space in a cost-effective and collaborative manner within a few short years. The possibilities are endless."

Countries selected to provide mission payloads will be asked to pay a pro-rated portion of the mission cost, based on the resources required to host the payload and their ability to pay. In addition, major sponsors are being sought to finance a large portion of the mission costs.

Path to Mission Launch

Over the next year, mission partners will conduct briefings to United Nations Member States and potential payload providers about the goals and framework of the mission and to solicit proposals for payloads. To make the program more accessible to nations without a highly developed space industry, UNOOSA will offer technical support to countries that lack expertise or experience in developing microgravity payloads. Payloads will be selected in early 2018 to allow time for development and integration into the Dream Chaser spacecraft for launch expected in 2021.

SNC's Dream Chaser is the only reusable, lifting-body, multi-mission-spacecraft capable of landing at commercial airports or spaceports able to accommodate large commercial aircraft – anywhere in the world. This offers the opportunity to land the United Nations mission in any licensed Member State supplying a payload on the mission. SNC is currently working with airports and spaceports to be granted a Federal Aviation Administration reentry license for commercial Dream Chaser missions. Recently selected to provide cargo delivery, return and disposal services for the International Space Station (ISS) under NASA's Commercial Resupply Services 2 (CRS-2) contract, Dream Chaser is a safe, affordable, flexible and reliable system capable of crewed and uncrewed transportation services to LEO destinations such as the ISS.

Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) release
United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs Announces Call For Interest for Dream Chaser Spacecraft Mission Payloads

The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) announced today the opportunity to participate in a space mission using Sierra Nevada Corporation's (SNC) Dream Chaser spacecraft. The low-Earth orbit space mission will take 20 to 30 powered experiments provided by organizations within the participating UN Member States, with a particular emphasis on developing and emerging countries.

Above: Simonetta Di Pippo and Mark Sirangelo after UNOOSA Call For Interest announcement.

"The benefits of a joint mission between government and private organizations on a level of this scale are incalculable," said Mark Sirangelo, corporate vice president of SNC's Space Systems business area. A key aspect of the mission is to provide training and facilitate development of technology, in particular for developing countries. The access to space and application of this technology, along with the overall growth of industry, are a part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

"This is about scientific discovery, and about opening space to organizations that may not have access to it otherwise," said Eren Ozmen, owner and President of SNC. "We're thrilled to provide the vehicle that will make this happen."

"We expect our efforts in building industry capacity to have long-term impacts, especially in space-related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education programs, and that these results will flow to the wider economy as a whole," said Simonetta Di Pippo, director of UNOOSA. "We are here to support developing and emerging countries and institutions so that this mission can really enable inclusive access to space for all and contribute to the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals."

The Call for Interest issued by UNOOSA provides a summary of the two to three week long in-space mission and requests information from UN Member States interested in providing payloads. The deadline for submission is Nov. 1, 2017.

Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) release
UNOOSA and Sierra Nevada Corporation announce Call for Interest to provide landing site for Dream Chaser spacecraft mission carrying experiments from UN Member States

The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) announced the opening of a Call For Interest (CFI) for UN Member States to provide a landing site for the Dream Chaser on its return from a mission expected to occur around 2024.

UN Member States will have the opportunity to apply to provide payloads or experiments to be accommodated on the mission, enabling them to fly in low-Earth orbit via the SNC's Dream Chaser. Selected payloads must contribute to the attainment of one or more of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). UNOOSA and SNC are currently working on the Announcement of Opportunity for this chance to provide experiments.

The Dream Chaser can carry a variety of payloads, such as individual powered, pressurized payloads, externally mounted payloads and externally deployed payloads, like cubesats. For this mission, the team is targeting to support a combination of 35 payloads, but a final decision will be made following the evaluation of the submissions.

As part of UNOOSA's Access to Space 4 All initiative, this mission will provide teams from all over the world with the opportunity to launch their experiments in orbit free of charge, fostering technological learning and capacity-building. This will also be the first-ever space mission dedicated to the SDGs.

Simonetta Di Pippo, Director of UNOOSA, said: "This collaboration with SNC is part of UNOOSA Access to Space 4 All Initiative, which includes research and orbital opportunities for UN Member States to access space through partnerships with space agencies, private companies and a research centre. UNOOSA will continue to build and expand the Initiative to ensure that the benefits of space, in particular for sustainable development, are truly accessible to all".

"At SNC, through Dream Chaser and our other programs, we are redefining how humanity reaches, explores and utilizes space," said SNC owner and CEO Fatih Ozmen. "This partnership with the United Nations is a perfect example of that. We think space should be affordable and accessible to all, and that ultimately it's a way to bring the world and its cultures together."
