I am trying to find out information on the joint US and USSR sounding rocket launches in 1977 from Wallops Island, Va. I want to write an article. Scans of philatelic covers also appreciated. |

Funny that you should ask about the joint US and USSR sounding rocket project in 1977. Your question jogged a deeply buried memory, and I dipped into my sounding rocket dossier to find a 1980 NASA report on the project conducted at Wallops Island, Virginia in August 1977. The Soviet research vessel Akademik Korolev anchored off Wallops Island on August 5, 1977 and prepared for the joint launchings with the Americans. The two sides agreed to commence launches on August 10, 1977. The Soviets utilzed their M100B "meteorological rockets" in shipboard firings, and NASA deployed their Super Loki Sphere and Super Loki Datasonde rockets. A total of 48 launches were conducted by both sides from August 10 through August 24, 1977. A detailed chronology of all of the launches is included in the brief NASA summary, as well as additional details of the project. There was another joint launching project with the Soviets at Wallops in 1978 called JASPIC. Contact me and I can provide scans of the two-page summary of the 1977 firings. | |
