Here's a website about an X-15 chase plane, F-104 60763, which will be used to set the landspeed record.

I didn't know that Wendy Shawler and Mervin Evenson also took part in X-15 program as USAF chase pilots.

Were you aware Jim McDivitt also flew some chase flights and was in line to fly the X-15 before heading to NASA?

I've got a whole list of the chase and drop pilots here - they're also listed in the Apogee book on the X-15 and the bible of X-15 literature, Milt Thompson's book "On the Edge of Space."

Mike Collins also flew chase for some X-15 flights.

Deke Slayton flew chase for some X-2 flights.

Of course, don't forget the book, "Hypersonic: The Story of the North American X-15" by Dennis R. Jenkins and Tony Landis.

The detail is phenomenal. They not only list details such as chase pilots, but what part of the flight they flew chase on, after all, you can't keep up with a Mach 6 rocket plane in a Mach 2 jet for too far. They list who was on the ground radio and everything else you could imagine.

Neil Armstrong flew on seven X-15 flights.

Jim McDivitt was a chase pilot on Armstrong's fourth X-15 flight in January 1962. Mike Collins was a chase pilot on Armstrong's final X-15 flight in July 1962.

Fred Haise was also an X-15 chase pilot.

All times are CT (US)
