I'm looking for ideas on where to find detailed construction information on the Viking '75 Project Mars Lander. I have done hundreds of general web searches, searches on the NASA Technical Reports Server, the IEEE website, and the AIAA web site to name a few. I've accumulated a moderate collection of engineering drawings about the lander, its aeroshell and base cover, and bioshield. I've posted the more legible ones in an album here.I've visited the Proof Test Capsule lander in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. I also had the chance to visit and photograph the Flight Capsule 3 in the Seattle Museum of Flight which was very helpful for seeing details (because it is nearly a bare lander structure). I've been able to acquire a few NASA and Martin Marietta publications, and various academic papers with useful information. But I'm still on the lookout for more! For example measured drawings of the lander's internal equipment plate and the three main side-beams (with their myriad machined flanges and stiffeners etc.). Or the RTG wind covers, or the bioshield base and cap structures, or etc.! Also, does anyone know of a Viking flight-type aeroshell, base cap or bioshield which could be visited? (Not the BLDT versions.) I've read rumors that Boeing has an aeroshell in storage somewhere. Thanks for any info. |

Tom, let me point out a great book on the NASA-JPL Viking missions: Vikings of '76 (by Hans-Pieter Biemann), Congress Catalogue 77-71945. |

Philip, thank you for the information about the Vikings of '76 book, I was not familiar with it. A quick web search has me a bit disappointed because the least expensive copy is $250 (US). This may take some digging. |

By the way, a couple of weeks ago I returned to the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, and spent a few hours photographing the Proof Test Capsule lander. Today I finally finished processing and captioning nearly 300 detail photographs which can be seen in this Picasa web album. | |
