Government of Canada release
Astronauts Wanted: Canada is Recruiting Astronauts for Future Space Missions

Have you ever wanted to go to space? The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) wants you!

Today, the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and the Minister responsible for the CSA, launched Canada's fourth astronaut recruitment campaign. The CSA is seeking the next generation of space explorers to pave the way for potential future space missions.

"Our astronauts have been a source of national pride for our country. If you have aspired to go beyond our planet's frontier, now is your chance to make this dream a reality," said Bains. "This class of Canadian astronauts will be part of a new generation of explorers to advance critical science and research aboard the International Space Station. Just like the astronauts before them, they will inspire young Canadians to view science and technology as accessible and interesting tools they can use to build their own adventures."

The Agency is accepting applications from June 17 to August 15, and expects to announce selected candidates in Summer 2017. This next class of Canadian astronaut candidates will start their training at NASA in August 2017.

Requirements and details for applications can be found here.

Through our participation in the International Space Station, Canada has developed an internationally-renowned expertise in robotics and optics; has provided access to this unique laboratory to Canadian scientists for their science experiments and has flown eight astronauts to space over 16 missions.

  • CSA will select two qualified astronaut candidates from a diverse pool of Canadian citizens with a wide variety of backgrounds.

  • Those selected after the first round of evaluation will take part in a rigorous selection process that will last almost a year.

  • To build on Canada's proud history in space and create opportunities for the space sector, Budget 2016 provides up to $379 million over eight years for the CSA to extend Canada's participation in the International Space Station to 2024.

According to the Canadian Space Agency, 7,793 people started the application process online. Out of those, 3,772 completed their application.

From that pool, 1,706 reached the cut-off score on a public service entrance exam. Of those, 163 have been selected to move on to the next step of the selection.

Canadian Space Agency release
Canada selects two new astronauts

Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau named two new astronauts who will join Jeremy Hansen and David Saint-Jacques as part of Canada's corps of space explorers. After a year-long evaluation, the Canadian Space Agency has selected Jenni Sidey and Joshua Kutryk from among 17 finalists and 3,772 applicants to be Canada's newest astronauts.

Born in Calgary, Alberta, Dr. Jenni Sidey studied at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, and at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, where she was an engineer and lecturer until being recruited as an astronaut.

Lieutenant-Colonel (LCol) Joshua Kutryk hails from Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. He studied at the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario, as well as in Florida and Alabama. Prior to joining the Canadian Space Program, LCol Kutryk worked as an experimental test pilot and a fighter pilot in Cold Lake, Alberta, and as a CF-18 fighter pilot in Bagotville, Quebec.

Prime Minister Trudeau made the historic announcement on Parliament Hill during Canada Day celebrations to mark the nation's 150th anniversary. He was joined by the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, who is responsible for Canada's space program.

The nation's newest astronauts are being named as space agencies around the world identify options for future missions that go beyond the International Space Station.

These new recruits will be part of the next generation of space explorers that pushes the limits of science and technology while advancing public understanding of our universe. In the process, they will inspire young Canadians to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Canada's space program is part of the Government of Canada's investments in science and technology under the Innovation and Skills Plan, a multi-year strategy to create well-paying jobs for the middle class and those working hard to join it.
