Francis French and other writers have alluded to a frilly, custom-made pink dress which was given to Helen Sharman by A. Leonov before her flight, and which she ended up wearing as a gag at one point on Mir. Is there any picture of this in space?

And is there any other instances of dresses or skirts ever worn on space missions?

The 'dress' can be seen in the documentary "Out of the Present." Sharman also tells the story in her own book, and describes it as "a kind of an all-in-one jumpsuit made out of chiffon, with elasticated bits to go around my knees and a wonderful frilly front and billowing sleeves."

It appears in the footage to have been adapted to shorts for the legs rather than worn strictly as a dress. Sharman's book suggests, to my reading, that Leonov had it specially adapted.

She wore it to dinner, as Leonov's joke seems to be that it would make it a more formal occasion. This was enhanced by Sergei Krikalev wearing a tie to dinner too - something that Sharman also mentions in her book, and can also be seen in the documentary.

In an interview I conducted with Tolya Artsebarski, her commander, he told me via a translator:

"I knew about the garment, as it was actually my idea! It was not a generic garment, it was put together by a special technician especially for Helen. She just wore it for one day; she did not wear it all the time."

This last photo shows that the outfit had shorts-type legs.

If a Russian woman ever ventures into space again, perhaps they'll let her wear a similar type of "dress" in honour of this fact(?)
