There was a show on the Science Channel yesterday that claimed through newly-released documents from the KGB that the CIA basically made sure Buran wouldn't fly and cost the Russians all their R&D spending.

Originally the U.S. shuttle blueprints were public documents that the Soviets copied from the hall of records. Once the DOD and CIA realized they were mistakenly copied and helped the Buran project catch up quickly, they purposely started uploading more plans with some faulty information — such as using glue for the thermal tile adhesion, something NASA had rejected, which in the test flight for Buran caused all the tiles to burn off quickly and never to fly again.

All times are CT (US)
