Today, 40 years ago cosmonauts Vasily Lazarev and Oleg Makarov survived a launch abort during an intended mission to Salyut 4.

In the wake of the 50th anniversary of Leonov's pioneering EVA, the forthcoming celebration of Ed White's first US EVA in June and 40th anniversary postings in July for the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, we should not forget the challenging experiences of these two cosmonauts on April 5, 1975.

There were contradicting reports or rumours regarding the actual landing site. Some said the landing site was on the Soviet side of the border, another said they landed already in China close to the Soviet border.

Does somebody know the correct answer?

According to the Praxis Manned Spaceflight Log 1961-2006 by Furness and Shayler, 18-1 landed inside the Soviet Union, 320km from the Soviet Union-China border. According to a contemporary account in AW&ST, the landing site was southwest of the town of Gorno-Altaisk.
