I found some documents titled Transcript Profiles, some which have very interesting information on space shuttle flights. They appear to be transcribed comments between the ground and the shuttle. Apparently the person doing the transcribing was not very familiar with NASA, as misspelled words and astronaut names are not uncommon.

Can someone provide more information on these documents?

Okay folks, either this was a real dumb question or no one knows what I'm talking about. The transcripts have cassette numbers associated with them, which suggests that the transcriptions may have not been done live, but at a later time.

Are these published documents or something more in-house/amateur? From what years in the shuttle program are they from?

It might also help to know how you came by them. Were they part of a historical archive?

To my knowledge these documents have never been published. I found them on a NASA website (I'm going through my notes looking for the site). They do indeed seem amateurish; some of them are useless as the handwriting is illegible and like I wrote earlier there are many misspelled words so the individual transcribing them did not appear to know a lot about NASA. Some can be read but are so nebulous as to be useless. However, some provide some great information.

The profiles that I found are up through 1985, so early shuttle. And not every mission was found.

Up through mission 41C, a typed verbatim transcript of the full mission was made. After this only transcript profiles were made of Air-to-Ground commentary. These were made so that they could more easily reference the mission tapes for specific mission events and comments and transcribe them later, if needed.

I know these transcripts — they come in handy especially recontructing flight events, because the tapes have all been time compressed (voxed). These profiles give the original GMT or CST or MET times linked to the communications.

I think these were done in real time, with the person making the profile, also changing the tapes. Sometimes, there are comments related to changing the tapes, for instance when this was done earlier because PAO needed the tape in real time for reference leading up to the upcoming change of shift briefing.

This is no amateur stuff: it was done at NASA-JSC.

Thanks for all the clarification. I too believe they were transcribed real time as the hand writing, in general, changes about every 8 hours or so (at least on the one I'm most interested in). But I can't be sure.

And yes, each page has MET captured at the top of the page and then GMT for each entry.

All times are CT (US)
