During any EVA since September of 1994, have any U.S. astronauts needed to activate/utilize their SAFER (Simplified Aid For EVA Rescue) device? |

In a word, no. SAFER has, to date, never been used for an actual EVA emergency. |

If memory serves it was also tested during an EVA on mission STS-120. Mike LA flew a planned demonstration during that mission. |

I recall L-A's SAFER checkout was refered to by the crew as "walking the dog" (due to the tether). |

There were a total of three SAFER test flights. STS-64 tested a prototype version while the production version was tested on STS-86 and STS-92.Scott Parazynski tested the first production SAFER during a spacewalk on STS-86. The plan was for Scott to remain restrained to the RMS and test the jets on the pack. But there was a problem as the pyros that were supposed to open up the passages between the thruster ports and the nitrogen tank (allowing the ports to pressurize) didn't fire. So the pack didn't work at all. NASA corrected the problem which lead to its successful test on STS-92. |
