I was wondering which space shuttle launch photo was fellow cS'ers favourite? Mine is from STS-1.I have always liked that photo. I think it sums up the majesty and the beauty of that first launch. |

I've seen some great photos shot by a lot of great photographers. But, my favorite photo of a shuttle launch is this one I captured on STS-131. It was my first (and last) attempt at trying to capture a night launch. I got some settings from a photographer who had done it before and while the exposure washed out the foreground a bit (I have another photo on a different camera showing the crowd being lit by the launch), I am still glad I was able to capture Discovery on its last pre-dawn journey into orbit less than an hour before sunrise. One day I'll likely composite it with the crowd shot to get me the best of both images (or do an artwork based on both images). Only day launch shots I caught that I am proud of are from Ares 1-X, but that isn't a shuttle mission so it doesn't count for this list. Of the professional launch photos, the STS-1 shot on the cover of the National Geographic issue covering the launch is one of my favorites. |

I always liked this image of STS-1's launch. The bird that happened to fly by just makes for a beautiful contrast between nature's flyer, and man's most advanced flying machine. |

Despite being friends with some of the best shuttle photographers in the business, my favorite shuttle launch photo is... one I took myself. This is the space shuttle and external tank flying over Co Kerry Ireland just 21 minutes after liftoff. We were all outside with the speakers up to the last and in suddenly the orbiter and tank appeared from the west and blazed across the skies at incredible speed heading east it was a night we will never forget. |

Thanks everyone. That mission was Mark Kelly's flight STS-124. I even had the great luck of meeting him before the year was out and telling him all about it. The night of the launch Dan Tani was home in Kinsale co Cork and also witnessed the event he was speechless with amazement. Here is a video of the great sight. |

Here on Long Island, N.Y. we would get our view of shuttle launches between MET 7 minutes, 45 seconds and 8 minutes, 45 seconds. In that time frame you are able to witness MECO... a pretty remarkable site. I wish I had video of it to share. |

Not surprising since Dan Tani used to fly model rockets as a kid and he worked for OSC on the Pegasus booster before joining NASA. So he goes for cool stuff like that. |
