From NASA's website:
Fly Your Face in Space

NASA wants to put a picture of you on one of the two remaining space shuttle missions and launch it into orbit. To launch your face into space and become a part of history, just follow these steps:

First... Select to participate and upload your image, which will be flown aboard the space shuttle. Don't have a picture to upload? No problem, just skip the image upload and we will fly your name only on your selected mission!

Next... Print and save the confirmation with your flight information.

Later... Return to the site after the landing to print your Flight Certificate - a commemorative certificate signed by the Mission Commander. You can also check on mission status, view mission photographs, link to various NASA educational resources and follow the commander and crew on Twitter or Facebook.

The website also provides a participation map showing where participants are from and, relative to each other, how many are taking part from each country.

I was looking to see a practical explanation of what's involved and didn't find any detail. I assume the images will be carried on the flight in digital form and that the 'signed' certificate at the end will be one that you print yourself?

In any case it's a nice idea and I've signed my kids up.

Number 3 from Louisiana for STS-133. This is really cool. Kudos to NASA for thinking this one up.

What does zip code mean? I'm trying to participate on 'Face in Space'... it wants my zip code. Wat is the zip code for the United Kingdom?

If you type or enter United Kingdom, it won't ask for your zip/postal code.

Just done mine for STS-133. I put my address as the UK, instead of Isle of Man, re-postcode.

Is there a way to see the photos submitted on the site? I hope I'm just overlooking that direction.

From what I understand, due to the restrictions placed on NASA by privacy laws, the submissions are not and will not be accessible to view.

For those of you that participated in the Face In Space, the certificates are now ready for printout for the STS-133 mission. You will need your "Flight Confirmation Number" to retrieve your certificate. Hope you kept it.

NASA Face in Space update
NASA's Face in Space campaign received 194,181 photos that will be uplinked to shuttle Discovery via Mission Control at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. The images will return to Earth through a data transmission, and contributors will be able to print certificates verifying their photos flew aboard Discovery.

More than 98,000 other photos already have been submitted to fly aboard the next shuttle mission. Shuttle Endeavour's STS-134 flight is targeted to launch April 19. Submissions will be accepted though the liftoff date.

Face in Space was recently added to the STS-135 flight of Atlantis.

Now you can have your photo flown on all three orbiters.

I have now got the STS-133 certificate I did for my daughter. I'm going to tweak it to show the picture uploaded and change the wording to read "Her face" rather than "the face". It makes it a little more personal in my opinion. She's only 2!

What if you've misplaced your Face in Space confirmation printout? Just out of luck I guess? Found my wife's, but not mine. Dang it.

Does anyone know if a video will be (or has been) released of the commanders of STS-134 and 135 acknowledging the face-in-space participants as was done on STS-133?

If I recall correctly, the planned Face in Space video during STS-134 was canceled due to scheduling issues. STS-135's video was downlinked and played back during the mission.
