The STS-134 crew portrait:

Download high resolution. Credit: NASA
Attired in training versions of their shuttle launch and entry suits, these six astronauts take a break from training to pose for the STS-134 crew portrait. Pictured clockwise are NASA astronauts Mark Kelly (bottom center), commander; Gregory H. Johnson, pilot; Michael Fincke, Greg Chamitoff, Andrew Feustel and European Space Agency's Roberto Vittori, all mission specialists.

Talk about looking relaxed. That's pretty laid back for a formal pose!

It looks like the photos of the baseball teams from the 1800's. Kelly looks like he's ready to spit some tobacco.

Who can guess what I added to Mark Kelly in the photo? Who can guess what I took off of Greg Chamitoff?

The watch!!!

In this photo of Greg Chamitoff training for STS-124, you can see that he is wearing the very same watch that Mark Kelly is "wearing" in the STS-134 portrait.

More evidence is that from all the images I have seen of Mark Kelly, I cannot find a single one where he is wearing a watch!

There are plenty of pictures (example) of Kelly wearing the same model watch. All astronauts are issued Omega X-33 watches by NASA.

Thanks for that info Robert - I never knew that (nor did I think to check the inflight images - Doh!).

Well, I'm stumped! I thought for a moment that it might be the ring, but that would be impossible, since Chamitoff's fingers aren't visible in the portrait.

I could be wrong but I don't think Sean was implying that what he removed from Chamitoff was added to Kelly. The two are separate...

I could see one copying the flag to Kelly's spacesuit, if Kelly wasn't wearing one at the time.

Here are the answers...

I added Mark's wedding ring, and I took off Chamitoff's fingers because it looked like they were Mike Fincke's fingers under Chamitoff's arm...

Also, all of the crew patches were added to the suits.

Did Mark Kelly ask for a ring to be added to his finger?

Appealing photo, non-stiff pose and more colorful background.

Vittori's left foot appears to be resting on something that's not there.

I could do with you to add a pair of gloves to my KSC pic that I had done at the visitor centre. They just painted the hands orange to match the suit.

Ah, so I was almost there then... kinda!

With reference to that launching shuttle on the left of the portrait, do you know what mission it was? Is it significant in any way? Thanks.

If you look at Greg Johnson's helmet visor in high def you can see the entire room where the photo was taken and most of the crew on the right of the visor.

It's a great photo!!

Not sure myself what mission the shuttle launching is, but wouldn't it be cool if it is STS-49, first flight of Endeavour.

I have a photo signed by Eileen Collins of the same image of launch. It is identified as the launch of Columbia on STS-50 in 1992.

By the way Sean - very cool crew photo - super job.

I don't think it is Columbia, because Columbia had the clearly identifiable SILTS pod atop it's tail, and the Shuttle launching in this portrait does not.

Unless of course Sean has done some more of his editing!

Cool poster. Is it from a movie theme?

According to Sean Collins, who designed the poster, it is based on the "Star Trek" (2009) movie poster.

Looks like the launch in the STS-134 crew photo is Endeavour's second launch (STS-47). See link of "47" launch.

I have seen all the posts about these shuttle crew "posters" and I was wondering, are they real posters or just photos put out that look like posters online? Is there anyway to get one if they are real posters? I am asking because my cousin is a friend of "Box" Johnson and I would like to get him a poster if possible.

There are physical posters produced, although reportedly fewer then in past years due to budget cutbacks. They are generally not distributed to the public (other than in digital form) but are hung throughout NASA centers supporting the missions and passed out to employees at Spaceflight Awareness (SFA) events.

All times are CT (US)
