I have wondered for a while about the function of the orange monitors at the ends of the consoles in both the shuttle and station mission control centers/flight control rooms (FCRs).These monitors are amber monochrome types with an unusual "vertical rectangle" format. They are not in the old Apollo-Era or pre-upgrade shuttle MOCRs. I am just guessing that they may be for configuring the consoles, but it is a wild guess. Does anyone know what these monitors are for or have any other info like what is displayed? |

I believe those panels are the audio panels that allow the controllers to transmit/receive on the various interphone loops and communications channels. They are configured with touch-screen type controls. |

After a search at NASA's Multimedia site, I found several hi-res images that have these audio panels pictured. Disappointingly, none of the images have the monitors shown clear enough to read the displays.It would be interesting to see what kind of data is displayed for the different positions and some detail of the FCR hardware in general. Folks, those are not data screens, they show the console DVIS panel (Digital Voice Intercom System). The programmable, touch screen version of the old Apollo console intercom keyset, which was hard-wired.Sy Liebergot

Sy, thanks for the heads up on the DVIS system. Do you happen to know the company that made these for NASA? Maybe we can look them up for more info. I have looked at NASA photo's until my eyes hurt looking for more info. You just gotta love mission control! |

What information is contained on the ends of each Mission Control console in the orange rectangular areas? It appears that each console has one at either end and I'm guessing it is an identical display of information on all of them? Also any close-up photos of this display?Editor's note: Threads merged. |

As Sy explained in his reply above from 2006, these panels control the Digital Voice Intercom System (DVIS). Planning team MMACS Kevin McCluney commented on these panels as part of an "Ask Mission Control" feature on NASA's website: What you are seeing are the DVIS (Digital Voice Intercom System) panels; each console generally has two of these (one on either side). These are touch screens (black background, amber text) used to select the communications loops with which the flight controllers talk and listen to each other and the crew. Up to 24 loops can be selected simultaneously. |
